My 2005 Sportster 215 runs excellent, no problems starting, idling or high speed but the "check engine" light goes on immediately when the plunger touches the starter hub. A local jet boat repair guy claims it is my ECU but I don't want to drop a grand to just get a light to turn off. It would be a different story if the boat wasn't running so well. I had the oil changed and new plugs, but the light stays on.

Just like a new car your boat has a computer that stores trouble codes. Without actually reading the codes the "local repair guy" and us here would just be guessing.
