Challenger 2000 Electrical and Starting Problems

Last week I took the Challenger out and it started on the trailer at the ramp with no issue. I got it off the trailer and over to the dock to get my family and it would not start. It seemed like it was going to start, but only lasted about 3-4 seconds and died.

I am really pressed for time at this point, so I had the marina I store it at look at it this week. They said I had a bad ignition switch and it also had a problem with the "Idle Up Controller Box". The mechanic contacted MERCURY and they told him to bypass that because the box has been discontinued and does not serve a critical function in this setup.

I picked the boat up today, started on first turn and got to the dock. Guess what, NO START. Same as last week. I called him and took it in. He said that some of the connections were loose and he got it running on the hose. I noticed no Tachometer movement at this time. I indicated this to him. He was concerned of the electrical in the front behind the dash, but thought that I should at least see if it starts in the water.

It started and ran fine. I turned it on and off about 10 times before loading my family. We were good for about 2 hours.

I noticed that when I went to turn on the radio it had NO POWER. Never an issue before. The horn and blower were ok, but no radio, tachometer or gas gauge - but that has not worked all season and I assumed it was a baffle, maybe its also related. Ran ok for about another hour.

Came time to bring home and the boat would not start, but the radio came on when I turned the key. I would turn it off, try again and the radio came on. I had to be towed about 8 miles back to the ramp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Just bought this in July and my wife has not been so supportive of my new hobby after the past 2 weekends.

Thanks

Voltage regulator

It seems as though my problem has been solved. I took it back to the shop and it was determined that the Voltage Regulator was bad. He indicated that it looked like it was burned.

From a search I discovered that in 01 there were some recalls for the voltage regulator. I called Mercury, but my serial # did not match the recall. They did check and found a recall on a fuel filter and fuel pump fuse that were never fixed on a recall, so my mechanic received the parts and took care of the issue.

I ran the boat today for about 5 hours without issue.

I hope this helps somebody out.
