how do i know how much back to shave?

Do a search on rave valve clearance and you will find some good info. I had to do mine after recently rebuilding my gsx. Can't remember the numbers exactly now sorry. If you can't find it I may be able to get it from my manual for ya.

my engine is painted white....

The white engines, both 787 and 947 are just the first productions of the engine. The silver engines are just the second+ generation where seadoo felt they worked enough bugs out, to justify identification by color. Has it been remaned? meh, I have no clue, if I rebuilt a white engine, I probably wouldn't go through the hassle of changing the color to silver.
