Carbon Ring not flush with ring seal

Hey my carbon ring on the port motor is outta place (small gap) and wont go back where its supposed to be. I'm pretty sure this is whats been causing my cavitation issues. How to I get it to "seat" back where it's supposed to be, and what actually holds it in its position?

Carbon ring....

The carbon ring and seal are held in place by simple keepers. The carbon ring, part #14 is held in place by the clamp and rubber joint. The seal carrier ring, part #8 is held in place by the "0" ring and C clip...........

Without seeing it in person, I would guess you have an o-ring that isn't seating correctly.

can you post a picture?

thats what I thought, but the boot and clamp wont "stretch" to where the carbon ring is now. So I'm guessing the problem I actually have is that the ring seal has actually slid up (probably due to a failed C clip) and that's what made the carbon ring vibrate outta place. That sound about right to you snipe? I mean we're not talking a ton of a gap here, maybe 3/16 of an inch of play here. I just wanted to see what all I had to order before I go pulling the shaft (I hate when ol Betsy is down)

yeah after reading u guys post i think its def the o ring, or the C clip that holds the rins seal carrier thats the issue, not the carb ring

Haven't seen it in a while, but if I recall, there are two grooves that the o-ring can fit into on the shaft. Slide the stainless ring forward, and make sure that o-ring is in the right groove, then pull the stainless ring back onto it till it pinches.

I think it will be obvious what is out of whack when you start to move things around.

ok will do. Oh and Timmy, I just got the bimini boot cover back today, so no more callin me a tight ass lol! We actually got the cavatation to stop..come to find out we had a lil bit of rope (4 to 5 FEET!) wrapped up in the weedless. She ran like a friggin champ yesterday! I think at the end of the summer we are gonna pull everything and replace the carbon rings, seals, wear rings, and impellers...and have a nice clean start to next year, now that we are learning our way around this boat. That way I figure we will have two sparkling carbs, new propulsion stuff, and new impellers, and should have a relativley problem free 2010.

thats how you do it...carbs,..etc, everything ready to go...good job, TIGHT ASS...,

Driveshaft Installation?

When reinstalling the driveshaft along with the new rubber boot, O-rings, tridon ring, climp clamp and carbon ring, do I need any special lubrication on the shaft and at what points? Any special sealant that I need? Do I simply pull the rings over the shaft as discussed before or is there any special tools that I need and what exactly do I have to do specifically in this process. Sorry I am new to this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

you need an impeller tool, and if u go to seadoopartswarehouse.com, they have exploded view diagrams that show any points where lube, sealant, etc should be put. They show it as parts and u can order the exact type of things u need. Just look under ur year/model.
