Well I still don't think the boat is running properly...
- has trouble starting (takes about 8-10 seconds of cranking fires up then dies as soon as i give it a little throttle or put in in forward or reverse. sometimes dies without doing anything. goes through this process 5-6 times before getting it to actually run).
- I really don't get any change in speed (mph) until throttle lever is moved halfway up (approx. 3500-4000 rpm) in which case it hesitatates then jumps up to about 30 mph. I can't get it to go anywhere inbetween about 5mph-30 mph.
- will sometimes bog down and stall out after increasing throttle.
- runs pretty smoothly at higher speeds.
- unfortunately tops out at about 45 mph on the speedo (which i'm sure is a gross exageration of actual speed but i havent been able to test with gps)
- Also has a rough idle
Things that have been done/changed so far:
- spark plugs
-inline oil filter
- inline fuel filter
- emptied oil resevoir and switched to amsoil interceptor
- emptied old fuel and repaced
-changed resonator (burnt a hole in it)
- changed waterflow regulator (was leaking)
- removed and cleaned rave valves (which had a bunch of sludge and carbon build-up)
I'm starting to lean towards possibly needing a carb cleaning. This is where the debate begins... I'm definitely not the most mechanically inclined person and have never worked on carbs before but i can definitely turn a wrench or two. Was thinking about taking it in to have it done but i've had problems with the only seadoo stealership around already and am a little weary of bringing it back to them. I've read several posts stating it wasn't that difficult. How tough would it be to clean the carbs on a 2003 sportster le and how tight (space wise) would it be to get them out of the engine compartment. Also should I possibly be considering a rebuild if i'm pulling them off in the first place? Or should I consider just leaving this job to the pros?
thanks, Sean
