Blown Up GTX DI

I'm thinking of buying a project for between sled season and 'ski season. There's a listing of an 03' GTX DI with motor issues. The listing says "There is a very bad rattling in the motor when it is running and the dealer informed me that the bottom end has serious issues."

What could this potentially be? What would I need for a rebuild, other than a crank and top end kit, assuming cylinders and everything else check out.
Again I am simply looking for something to tinker on for a while; don't offer to send it off to get rebuilt-I don't find any fun in that.

Can't hurt to look. But look closely at the cases. That rattling could be the rod swinging thru the cases. Cases are gonna run you a few hundo's alone for a 951.

My only issue with just "going to look" is that it's a 3hr drive each way. And the owner seems pretty oblivious, so asking him if the cases are alright would be near useless I would imagine?

However, if cases run a few hundred (seen $275 on eBay), it'd be just about at a grand or so for a full rebuild.

I would NEVER buy a DI ski unless it was given to me. And even then, I'd sell parts off it. They run great when all is good. Very expensive and a nightmare when there is an issue. Very hard ski to fix compared to others.

Disregard this-- seller just emailed me saying it's sold.

Thats always a let down. Must have been in nice shape, priced right, or both?

I really like the DI's while my 4tecs are my favorite, I will buy another DI if one shows up.
They are challenging & require a few specific tools to work on them but I enjoy that. expensive engine to rebuild. Using oem parts, I have spent between 800-1000 on each one so far. Throw in the possibility of a bad fuel pump & you can be upside down in one very quickly. Ask me how I know..... 02RXDI

Both. Hull was mint, along with seat. Been garaged it's entire life. $600.

Oboy, thats too bad.......
those are the ones you just buy & then figure out if if you should have, when its home in your garage. the red/white one?

Crank bearings are really prone to rusting on them. One of the big downfalls if they are not fogged regularly. Like racer said, if they spit the big end of the rod bearings, really good chance the crankcase is ventilated too. Another common scene in the failed ones.
