bilge pump

I have a new 96 sportster that the prior owner would ride then pull from the water. I keep in the water (for 1 week now)

When I opened the engine cover there was decent amount of water down in the middle of the boat, I turned on bilge pump but it did not seem to get rid of all the water. Is this the way it should work?

Also, I thought the bilge would automatically turn on as it had a float in it?

Any suggestions.

The auto switch is probably bad.

The factory bilge pump isn't mounted to the bottom of the boat... so it doesn't get all the water out. You could mount one lower if needed.

Last thing... the driveshaft seals in a seadoo leak, and they are not meant to be left in the water. Be very careful that your boat doesn't sink.

Test your float with a hose...If the water goes past the float and bilge pump does not turn on, something is wrong.

My original float has been inoperable ever since I bought the boat. I added a rule float and another bilge pump (1250gph),along with an alarm and dash light when the float is triggered.

The smaller the bilge, the FASTER a boat will sink with a comparable hole.to stay afloat you need to pump MORE than you are getting in.... Also, I would recommend a float attached to a LOUD horn further up, just in case, if your boat is unattended that long. (Possibly with a separate small battery for it, if the hole is right sized, the battery will drain from the bilge pump, THEN the boat will sink !

Cheap insurance.

Good Luck

is the sportster setup so that the bilge pump turns on automatically, or do I have to leave the key on?

are there instructions to setup a separate battery for the bilge?

thx

I left boat in Saturday, there was heavy rain saturday too. I cannot get there until tomorrow, do you think the boat might be ok and not sunk?

I did not realize you could not leave it in the water.

I left mine in sea water for the last week tied up behind a vacation house in New Jersey. No significant water seemed to leak into mine all week. I pulled the plug after taking it out on Saturday and barely anything drained.

I leave mine in all season as well and never get that kind of water in there. I would replace the pump just to cover yourself.
