Best method for removing a 720 PTO

I have read about several different methods for removing the PTO, but which one works best? I should have the required tools: a impeller tool, chain wrench, propane torch, pipe wrench and a cheater pipe. I appreciate your help!

First you need to lock the rear cylinder with either rope down the sparkplug hole or remove the head and use a block of wood.

I prefer to heat the PTO then use a chain wrench to remove it. It has normal threads so counterclockwise to remove. I don't like the impeller tool because you can damage the splines if it is really tight.

Heat will definitely be your friend,,,I use the rope method as well, a large pipe wrench, and a large hand maul,,,I lay the motor on a hsrd surface,,,a second hand may help if your knee can't steady the motor,,,don!t forget to remove grease fitting first,,(7mm I believe)

Poops is correct.

If the engine is getting torn down anyway I like the block of wood under the head.

On PTO’s that are super stubborn the rope can compress to much for the big hammer blow to pop it free.

I am rebuilding the engine, so I will use the wood block. How much heat? In one area or all around the PTO.

Depends on the PTO but you won't hurt anything with Propane or MAPP gas.
Heat all the way around the middle, not the outside diameter, you want the threaded part to expand.

After preparing for a battle, the PTO came off with ease. The PO put anti-seize on the crank.
