I'm 100% new to PWC and bought a used one last week. It is a 1995 seadoo bombardier SP. I removed the cables and took the battery out to charge it, but now I cannot seem to tighten them back on. The screw and nut just remain very loose. Is there some trick I'm not doing right?

OK, If you are saying that the nut won't get tight on the screw, then maybe the screw is stripped.
If it isn't then try sticking a small piece of wood (like a shim) between the nut and the "side wall" and see if you can tighten it some more.
Post a pic if possible.

Where is Katy?

Sometimes the battery does not hold the nut still or may not have it close enough for the bolt to engage in the threads. You may have to secure the nut with a small screwdriver until it engages.

Good luck and enjoy.

yea, enjoy the 1/2 assed battery post design. you think that in 2011 they could come up with a better way...

The screws did not look stripped, but there were screwed in there pretty tight. At work, so I'm not able to post a picture. Maybe a slightly bigger screw you work also, dunno. Katy is about 25 miles west of Houston.

As everyone else said, the screw may not be engaging the threads. Depending on the battery brand theres generally a square threaded insert in the the terminals that can fall out. So you may wana make sure its even there before anything else because if its not yoll never get it to tighten. Let us know

Take the batt. cable off and try to tighten it up.The thickness of the cable end is sometimes enough, not to let it engage. If it does engage, undo it,put some grease on the nut .That may help to hold it up in place.
