At my wits end, 787 problems

Bought this 1997 GSX a few weeks ago. PO said it had a bog. So I took apart carbs, replaced small filters and diaphragms, set pop off (25 psi or so), new fuel lines, new fuel selector, cleaned raves, repaired water regulator (tiny screw for the clamp came off), completely drained fuel system and added new gas. New plugs and compression is about 150 and 150.

What the problem is, it will sometimes only accelerate to 5000-5250 rpms and hold there for a few seconds before taking off and ending around 6700 rpms. Now I can make the problem worse by loosening the rave springs. It runs best with the rave springs all the way in. Do the springs wear? Could my raves be opening too soon?

Let me add it fires right up, idles perfect, and runs great wide open. 54 mph and 6700 rpms.

Most all of the 97 787 models had problems with the rave valves. At work I have the service bulletin seadoo sent out to the dealerships and how they need to remedy this problem. My 97 spx did the same thing. I'd be willing to bet a lot you arenrunning just the smooth rave valves. You need the slotted ones. Change them out and the problem will go away

Hmm, interesting. I think I have some raves out of a 96 gsx, would they be slotted?

Nope, not unless they've been replaced with the newer versions.

My 96 had the smooth ones as well.

Think I read somewhere that WSM was having a bad batch last year and to avoid them for cracking.
If you replace them I'd go OEM.

Word. I did some research and all the threads talking about it describe my exact symptoms. Ill get some slotted raves and report back. These engines are some of the trickiest to work on...

The first thing I thought when you said "it will sometimes only accelerate to 5000-5250 rpms and hold there for a few seconds" was your cavatating. On second thought, check your rectifier because that will causing strange intermittent problems directly affecting the way it runs and its known for limiting RPMs. Just a thought.

Here's the service bulletin. I still run the flat RAVE's in my 97 GSX. In my experience, you can lessen the flat spot around 5k by running the RAVE's with the red top flush with the cap. Less tension on the spring. For me, the flat spot is still there but it's far less annoying.image.jpg

This is exactly what I thought of when I read that statement.

I have tried unhooking the red wire from the rectifier at some point in time with no change in how it acts. I will try the raves

I have had best results having the red cap turned all the way in. If I pull it all way way out, it will take forever to get above 5000 rpm

Put in slotted raves. No change. I took the pump off today. Found the impeller had been cracked and repaired. Not sure if it has anything to do with it but I switched in a new solas and wear ring while I was there. Will try again this weekend. My water regulator is 2 turns out and raves all the way down.

With the raves turned all the way in its gunna be hard to get them open. Set them at flush with the top of the cap.

Does pulling the choke slightly help you get past that point ?

I'm thinkng the pilot jets and low speed circuit are partially clogged or corroded. So lowering the pop off or going to larger pilot jets might help. Basically more fuel at that point is what I'm after.

I will try that over the weekend CReynolds. I have tried pulling the choke and it will stall it. I have just been through the carbs, they are perfect..... At least I am pretty sure they are!

Totally was just done and frustrated with this POS. nothing was working. But I felt something wasnt right because adjusting the raves and water reg did almost nothing. Started retracing my steps and found this...... Mega kick to my face.... Dumbass dumbass dumbass.....
