I have a leak in the "accordian boot" / carbon ring area on my 98 GTS. Does anyone have a how-to with pictures on how to check and replace or rebuild this seal. What parts do I need to rebuild it if possible? any special tools needed or good tips are appeciated. I havent taken it apart yet and want to know how bad it will be before I get started.

The problem- I am getting water into the hull from the carbon ring area. It doesnt look like much but after a bit of riding I have 4"+ in the bottom of the ski. I checked the syphon tubes and they are there and look ok, no holes in hoses or exhaust... but If I push the rubber boot at the carbon seal up or down the water flows in then. I dont have any cavatation at all when riding so hopefully its just a bad Oring.

Any thoughts
Thanks
Ray

I haven't seen one... but I could put one together in the next week or so. I'm going to change the impeller on my XP... and I could get a few pics.

BUT... you will need:

1) boot
2) carbon ring
3) The O-rings inside the stainless ring
4) A new C-clip. (older seadoo's have an O-ring holding the stainless ring in place)

What to do:

1) Remove the gray plastic cover behind the engine
2) Push the stainless ring toward the trasom.
3) Remove the C-clip or cut the O-ring (Depending what you have)
4) Remove the pump

Once the pump is out... the drive shaft will pull out, and now you can replace the seal parts.

NOTE: do not remove the pump first !!! You need it in place to push the stainless ring. If the pump is off... the drive shaft will move.

Doc, I know I started this thread almost a year ago... but Thanks again for the pics. I just realized I never posted a thank you before.

Sad enough I never got around to changing the carbon ring yet, finally getting back to my toys and changing the seal this weekend hopefully. I ended up using my GTX to finish out last season and completely forgot about this til I put her back on the water last weekend and remember the leak.

Now that I am finally ready to change the carbon ring... From looking at the ring while still on the ski looks intact and no cracks or damage visable. Is there a way to check and see if the carbon ring is good? Any specs or tollerances that can be checked to determine if it actually is the seal that is bad or maybe just and O ring or boot? could something else be causing the leak before I dig into it.? I recently changed the wear ring last season and out on a new impellor from SBT at the time. Seemed to run fine for a month or two befire I noticed the water coming from the carbon ring area.

belated Thanks again
Ray

I appreciate the thanks... but that's why I'm here.

Nope... you normally can't tell in the ski. (if there isn't major damage) I've replaced carbon rings that looked OK... but I knew they didn't seal properly.

Most of the time... once you get it out... you will see it's warn, or that the O-rings in the stainless ring are hard as a rock, and are leaking.

Let me ask you this... are you getting cavitation... or are you just taking on water? If you don't have cavitation... then it's probably not seal related.

Im just taking on water at the carbon ring area. No cavatation that I know of or remember anyway. I only had it out for a few minutes last weekend before I noticed the leak again and and water filling up quick in the hull. Just took her back to the dock. Last year I sucked up a rock and had bad cavatation from the chipped impellor and and replaced a badly needed wear ring, was was fine since then that I remember. Drive(impellor)Shaft was tested last year at the same time for straightness and was fine so after much reading on here was leaning towards the boot or carbon ring being that is where I saw the water seeping from when the engine was off.

I'm going through this right now and can't figure out how to get the ring off the boot that attaches to the flywheel. This has to come off to pull the driveshaft out, right? In the picture, it is the one with the green paint on it. It seems like it may be permanently closed. Anyone know how to remove this?

Hi new to the form. I have a 1999 gtx limited and trying to push the stainless ring and carbon ring towards the pump to access and remove the c-ring. The stainless ring won't budge. Any suggestions or is there another thread about this? Just had the wear rings replaced. Parts plus $39 labor (I had just taken the pumps to the shop so saved labor of removing and re-installing them). Thanks

The pump has to be on the ski. You need it there so you can put pressure on the driveshaft.

Use a block of wood behind the PTO, and then use a tire spoon, or prybar, to push on the stainless ring. Most of the time, they are hard to move... and it's dam near impossible to move by hand. UNLESS, they were just serviced, and still has some grease in it.

yes I had the pump back in but no movement. Your suggestion of the wood block and tire spoon did the trick. Got it out and just waiting for the carbon ring to be shipped. Thanks.
