Hello all! I recently bought a 1995 XP with the 717 engine. The thing cold starts very easily and runs great till you shut it off. My son took it off the trailer today and rode it non stop for an hour and the thing runs great, until you shut it off. It will non restart when the engine is hot. I put a new coil in it this week along with new NGK plugs, but they didn't change anything. When you try to start it with the engine warm, you can feel and hear the engine firing but it just won't "take off".

I would sure appreciate any suggestions on what to check or look for as I'm stumped. I thought for sure it was the coil heating up and loosing spark.

Thank you both for replying, I appreciate it. I went out to tinker with it today and found I burned up the starter yesterday trying to get it going again. I thought I had just run the battery down. I whacked the starter just to see for sure and it then turned over and fired right up. I shut it off and connected the garden hose to her to see if she was charging. When the hose was turned on I found a pretty good water leak at the casting plug on the exhaust elbow. So I took it all apart, had my awesome neighbor weld up the casting plug, and I ordered a starter. Next weekend I will put her back together and hopefully be able to provided more information for diagnostics. Thanks again, Jim
 
Also the aftermarket starters are junk and will only last one season if you are lucky. If you still have the stock starter just order a brush kit for it from ebay.
 
I just bought this Seadoo and I doubt it is the stock starter. I have no idea how to replace the brushes in one. I sure wish I did though!
 
If it is white it is the factory one. You would be surprised how many are still on the stock starter. The rebuild is easy.

It is not a hard job at all... I didn't look, but I am sure YouTube has a video on it. One thing to note, scribe a line from the case to the rear cover. This will ensure that the brushes are in the correct location when reinstalled.

Some will spin in reverse if the rear cover is 180 out..
 
Thank you all for posting up!! The starter I took off is black. I found a new starter from Amazon for $60 and I'm going to go that route. I realize it's probably a cheap Chinese one that won't last, but until I find out what else is wrong I need to conserve funds just in case I have to put it in the shop. Never know, I may try to rebuild the one I am replacing and keep it for a spare...lol
 
I got it all put back together Monday and got her wet yesterday. I made sure the battery was fully charged and when I got to the lake I set the idle to 1500 rpm as it was idling a little lower. I also cleaned the new spark plugs before leaving the house. It started reliably and ran great all day long! The only hesitation was when I spun it out and wiped out pretty hard. It took a couple cranks that time. But other than that, it did great. However, has anyone ever experienced one that hesitates to start when you have a lot of weight on it? I weigh about 215 and when I would try to take my daughter with me, another 100'lbs or so, it was a lot harder to get fired up?? I guess maybe the lake water fills up the exhaust to the point that the starter is struggles? I don't know, any thoughts? Thanks, Jim
 
Well, the extra weight COULD affect the starting if the engine has low compression. As the impeller turns when cranking, it is creating load. So,,, with a good compression engine I'm with Spin in that the extra weight would mean nothing. But if the engine is weak, it could cause a harder to start situation.

I was thinking more along the lines of with the extra weight on board the exhaust is so far below the water line that the exhaust pipe fills with water making it difficult on the starter to crank the engine at full speed while having to push the exhaust out through all the water.
 
Along with a leaky needle and seat in the carbs, if it does this hard starting when hot again, it could be the rotary valve clearance. My 96 GTi has a 717 engine and it does the same thing. I've just dealt with it as it usually isn't shut off once we get it running when we ride, but I did look into this past winter and it was borderline in spec. I may freshen up the whole engine this winter, it's got probably close to 150 hours on it now and it's never been apart...
 
Well, I had a few minutes today so I ran the comp test. I did the test on a cold engine with both plugs out. I cranked about 4 seconds on each hole but max psi was reached after about two seconds. Both holes built 145 psi. Is that good or bad for the 717 engine???
 
Its good.
Expect 150-155 psi for a new engine.
Did you have the throttle wide open ?
What altitude are you at ?
