Am I getting ripped off?

Have a 2001 seadoo GTX RFI had engine rebuilt last year and was running fine earlier this year. Then had problems with bogging at start and WOT and speed topping out in low to mid 30's. Took it to seadoo dealer and TPS had to be calibrated and they said it was fixed. 1st day out it was the exact same and took it back the next day. Told us it was ignition coil and told my wife it was too difficult for me to replace so they did it for $638. Later found out I could order one for $150 and would haver taken less than 30 min to do, it sits right under the seat. Said it was fixed but when I took it out it was the exact same with new coil. Now they say it could be fuel pump or injectors. This is a Seadoo dealer with a master mechanic, I can't understand why they keep telling us its fixed when it is clearly not. Also he told my wife the max speed on it is 45mph. Does all this sound reasonable and at what point do I quit pouring money into it? I have spent $2400 in the last 18 months since buying it for $3250.

thats there job.

if it weren't for guys like you, dealerships would be outta business...;)

Sounds like injector/s clogged up, man

Dealer said ignition coil bad and replaced it. When the seadoo still didn't run right I located the ignition coil under the seat and unplugged the new coil and connected the old. It ran the exact same with the od ignition coil on as it did with the new. Since it did not affect the performance how do I know it needed to be replaced. My wife asked the mechanic and he said he took coil off somebody else's seadoo and put it on mine and it ran good. If we get it running right and there is no difference when we put the old coil in then that did not need to be replaced. Is there any recourse with the dealer for unnecessarily replacing a part. Thanks for your response, options are limited where I live.

To answer your question.....yes you GOT ripped off! My next trip to the dealer would be on them! Most problems with these machines can be fixed with a shade tree degree! There're many knowledgeable mechanics on this forum, that can diagnose many the problems! See if they'll refund you back the labor!

Dealer has it now and is looking at the problem and diagnosing at no charge. The thing that bothers me the most is that he told my wife replacing the ignition coil was too difficult for me to do so we trusted him. I could have changed them out in less than 30 min. When it didn't run right i reconnected the old one and they are no different. Is there a way to test the new and old coils? If the prob now is injectors they send them off, how much should I expect to pay. If it is fuel pump and i decide not to get it fixed what is the best way of selling it for parts?

My local sea doo "mechanic" told me that a rectifier was too difficult for the novice mechanic to replace.:puke: They're in business. They're rip-offs. In my case I told the guy your're full of $hit, and found another dealer 20 miles further out, that seems really honest.

I diagnosed and replaced my rectifier last year with the help of this forum. Wished I had done more research on the coil but we thought we could get it fixed right and in a timely manner with the dealer. We were camping when my wife took it in the second time and was in shorts and a dirty t shirt. Their "master" mechanic told her she probably couldn't afford his hourly rate. We are not rich but we have a decent amount of money in the bank. He told us max speed on it was 45mph and our speedometer was not accurate so he calibrated it. Said he had it at 45 but when we took it out that day it would only run at 32-35 and when my wife qustioned him about it he got defensive and asked her if she was calling him a liar. Does anybody know the top speed, I have looked online but couldnt find it.

you DID test the old coil. You installed it, and it had spark, so no need for the new one. There sit'n back, drum'n up some other line of B.S., to tell you.

99% of Seadoo problems are fuel related.
That said, Take the injectors & rail to an Injection shop, they usually clean an Inj for $20. Remove the fuel pump assembly from the tank and put in a new updated pump & filter. I sell'm $120 shipped. Swab the tank and air chuck the lines. Do the
normal maintenance (raves, water regulator) while she's down. It'll run like New!

Thanks for the advice, there is an injection shop a few mile from where I work. This may be a silly question but what is air chucking the lines? Just blowing compressed air thru?
