I am rebuilding the carbs on a 94 xp and keep reading don't use aftermarket kits. I have rebuilt multiple carbs on autos for years using aftermarket kits with good results. What is so wrong with doing the same on the Mikuni carbs? Is there some real problem?

If there wasn't a problem... you wouldn't read about it on this board.

MOST of the aftermarket kits have 2 issues.

1) The regulator diaphragm is either too stiff, or the nipple in the center is the wrong length.
2) The needle and seat are machined to the wrong sizes

The problem with #1 is that it will cause fuel leaking, and hard re-starts.

The problem with #2 is that you won't be able to set the pop-off properly.

In the aftermarket kits... all the gaskets, and pump parts are ok.
