Hi everybody, i just bought a 2003 speedster 240 hp. This is my first boat so before the first ride i wanted to know the little tips to be aware of. I would like to have that boat as much reliable as possible before the first ride: is there any filter, separator or liquid to change, any little equipments to be sure they're in good running condition. Also, wath's the best 2 stroke oil to put in it (bombardier, castrol, mobil...? syntec, not syntec...?). And my last question is how long (in hours) can i expect to do with a full tank (40 gallons) at 30-35 mph with 4 persons in the boat (without skiing).

Sorry for my english (i'm from Quebec). Thanks in advance !!

Well I can tell you with speaking to the MPG (miles per gallon) question it all depends on so many factors. How choppy is the water, how hard is the engine working to achive the desired speed. How is your system working i.e. pump, impeller, seals. I can tell you with my 1996 speedster with a 30 gallon tank which probably does not hold a candle to your boat, I can go to the lake all day (6 hours) full throttle most of the day and use about 4/5 of tank. But if I am just going 15-20mph then I can go to the lake at least 3 times before I need to fill it. Full days of course. Hope that helps, Karl or any of the other experts on here can tell you the rest about oil and such.

I only run the Quick Silver Premium TC-W3 oil that Mercury recommends in my Utopia.

If you just purchased the boat and are not sure what or when the last service was start by replacing the spin on fuel/water separator filter. Change the oil in both the stator, and the gear case. Make sure that you have lots of oil in your large oil reservoir tank.

If the boat has not run in a while, remove the battery and take it to auto parts store to have it tested. Make sure when you disconnect the battery that you mark where all the wires came from for easier installation later.

As for fuel consumption, that is really hard to say for sure, but you should get anywhere from 4-6 hours of none stop 30mph cruising, or about three average days on the lake.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
