How do you remove the oil injector cable from the carburetor on a 717 engine in a Sportster 1800? I have all the bolts off and the carb is dangling by 2 of the cables, and I just cant see how the oil injector cable connects at either end to remove it while standing on my head and working at arms length.

The injection cable is secured by a jam nut on top of the throttle flange, there's another 10mm nut on the bottom of the threaded cable barrel just spin that jam nut off the top and turn the threaded barrel out of the linkage and let it rest on top of the plastic cable guide.

After a bit of messing with it I was able to disconnect the cable at the oil injector end. Unlike the diagrams in the service manual, and photos I found online for dual carburetor setups there is no lock nut or threaded section on the lower end of the cable where it connects to the oil injector, just a button you twist and slide out of a slot at the end and a slotted holder that holds the cable sheath back.

I have not been able to remove the black holder "button" cable guide without breaking it. I usually break it. No more, now I unscrew the cable from the carb side and leave it atached to the oil pump. This has saved me a lot of grievance.

Glad you got it out. Clean fuel is the key to clean carbs. Keep your fuel filters in good shape and ensure you have good fuel line from there to the carb.

Good Luck.
