Hi,

I bought 2-99 gtis. Replaced the engine in one and rebuilt carbs in both. New engine pwc runs perfect. Other one starts and runs fine in and out of the water, but will not accelerate much past idle, maybe 10mph, for a long time 1/2 hour or more then all of the sudden it will start to surge and eventually it will come right out of it and run perfectly for the rest of the day. Sounds like its accelerating more when run dry on trailor, so obviously it doesnt like the resistence in the pump area. Thought it might be the wear ring, but why would it suddenly start operating correctly if that was the problem? No backfiring or dying during all of this. It runs fine. It's like driving a car with one foot pressing the gas and the other holding down on the brakes. Any ideas what's going on?

You probly have old grey lines and an aluminum selector. Replace those and go thru
the carbs. Go over your wire harness connections, clean & dielectric grease them. Its
running lean, thats why it don't like water! I bet you haven't even dumped the separator bowl or greased the zerk. It won't go because the carburetor filters are
gummy. Bills86e

yupp... i think there should be single section along with trouble shooting, and general discussion, called old grey fuel lines gummed up carb filters with a clogged selector... sounds like the "old grey lines" went ahead and f#*$ed up a saturday for ya... but you gotta get this problem fixed quick.. its all downhill from there, im doin mine tomorrow have'nt even been riding yet this year because this problem, finally got a good day to do it and all the materials ready to go...i know mine is bad because at the end of every line connection there is literally a mound of blue gunk... looks like dark blue jello squeezing outta the lines... no bueno muchacho, you may wanna go ahead and just clean the whole carb setup too like bills sayin, deffinately dont be lazy about this some people just wanna clean the filter and be done that is not right... good luck to ya happy cleaning, and remember while your doin it, i am positive somebody somewhere else is knee deep in the same project we are ALL fixing the same problem!!!! keep us posted, im gonna try and post some pics. just to add to the others on how seriously fast this stuff can mess up a hole summer:ack:

Thanks guys, I do have grey lines, and I will replace them, but I removed them at several points and no sign of any gunk anywhere. Checked the carb and its clean and gets a nice stream of gas when throttle is engaged. Seperator bowl is clean and screen is nice and clear. I've also checked the battery volage when running, 12.3v. Ive checked every connection and fuse, no sign of corrosion that I can find anywhere. It really runs fine, doesn't die or act like it's starving for fuel. It just acts like something is holding back the rpms when in the water. Always the same speed, doesn't surge or thrust. It just decides somewhere after a period of time to start running full speed and runs perfectly the rest of the day, no matter how many times you start or stop it or let it sit for awhile. Next day after it's completely cooled down, whole routine starts up again.

Once again, I'm new and don't doubt you guys know your stuff, but I'm not sure I explained my situation correctly. I may be wrong, but just this change your diagnosis any?

yep... just because you cant see doesnt mean it's not there.... have you broken down the carbs yet? and looked at the internal filters... also realize how tiny some of the passages in the carb's are, there super easy to clog, i rebuilt mine this weekend and there was some build up in there comparable to molasses it was nasty, furthermore the filters were nothing shy of disgusting... and my ski was running "fine"... another problem is the fuel selector valve...on, off, res... take it out and see if its clogged, it could be restricting flow... it may only do it for 30 mins or so because its clogged.. you give her gas gas gas... the clog moves, or passes, then you ride hard all day turn it off let it cool, new clog settles.... same process all over again.. but im tellin you the stuff that came out of my carbs was thick black nasty sludge!!!
