99 GSX RFI cuts out while riding-no instrumentation-no engine. Help!

I have received great direction from this forum and I appreciate any help you can supply. Thanks in advance. I have a 99 GSX RFI. The problem ,right now, is that I could be riding along and all of a sudden everything goes dead. No instrumentation and no engine power. Dead in the water. I pull the lanyard off, put it back on, get two beeps and it starts right back up. The clock still maintains the time so I don't think there was an interruption in battery ground. I have replaced the post, the rectifier, the starter, the start/stop button. I have three different lanyards that all work. I have checked the battery ground. I have checked the ground wires at the flywheel cover (removed and cleaned and checked for weakness). I get no warnings on instrumentation. Battery is good. If I am forgetting anything I would appreciate you pointing it out. HELP!!!!:banghead:

Sounds like the lanyard post is going bad. We see it here all the time. When the little switch inside starts to give up... it's acts the same, as if someone pulled the lanyard.

Thanks for your quick reply Dr. Honda. It does sound like a post problem. If that's all it is, it's an easy fix. Do you think my new post could be bad? Just replaced it last year. Is there a way to test the post?

There's no good way to test it since its going intermittent.

BUT... also look at your lanyard. If the rubber cup is warn, or cracked... it will cause issues too.

It's not common for a pot to go bad after only a year... but it can happen. Also... is your "NEW" post an OEM, or was it aftermarket? Also... was it a "Good used" post??


If it wasn't a new OEM post... I would still be suspect of the post.



With that all said... since it sounds like you replaced it recently... check over the wires you had apart. It could be a loose wire.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, the replacement post was OEM. The rubber cups are all in good condition. I will check the wiring where the replacement was involved. I will post results when complete. Thanks for the direction.

I opened the connection where the wires from the post connects. I saw a lot of dielectric grease on the connections itself. Could this have plagued the connection? Too much grease on the metal connectors? I won't know if this was it until I ride again.

pull out the crank sensor and check for metal stuck all over it, if there is, clean it all off and try it out, then if it seems to be ok, you will have to pull mag cover and clean, (vacuum out) metal shavings, (from starter and flywheel), but dess posts do cause problems, this is just something easy to check

Suggestion from Grizz400 to clean the crank sensor. Thanks. I pulled it and cleaned off a few small pieces of metal. Not sure if that fixed the problem yet. Still haven't taken it on the water.
