99 gsx carbon seal

I have gsx rfi and the engine is complete and going in the ski within the next few days and was suggested to replace the carbon seal with a support bearing. Also, here in Puerto Rico people call things by different names than what Americans call them. I have no idea what i am looking for nor where to look anyone know of what i speak?

Personally, just stick with the carbon seal. I have been buying the Heavy Duty carbon seal kit from OSDparts.com and a new boot too. It's awesome, zero maintenance, yes the cost is more. If you don't grease the carrier bearing it can seize on the shaft and rip the thru hull adapter out of the hull--thus requiring you to install that knurled piece and a new carrier and a new driveshaft. Points can be argued either way for both. A properly set up carbon set up works just fine.


Here is the HD kit, and the other picture is to show you the difference from stock(stock is on the left).

They go at both ends of the shaft, one on the PTO end and one on the pump end. If they are not on the ends of the shaft when you pull the shaft out, they are more then likely stuck inside the PTO or the pump. You will have to dig them out before installing the shaft.

 
Good catch on the bumpers..

They are important. It will all go together without them, but there will be issues...
 
What issues? Mine didn't have them when i disassembled

They absorb and limit lateral movement which increases how fast the metal wears. Most that have stated that their splines wiped out said they either didn't know the bumpers existed and or couldn't find them once they pulled it all apart.

In the water they absorb some load as compared to metal to metal impact.
 
if you leave out the front rubber bumper, your driveshaft will go way up inside the pto, this will allow water to enter the hull through the carbon seal, and guess what, im talking water will cover your battery in 15 minutes of riding, your bailers will not keep up with that leak, at 2.00 each, they have to be there ....thats the only reason i told you about them ......
 
Dbl check with a screwdriver and scrap the inside of the PTO and pump where the shaft goes in, I am willing to bet they were in there and are all smashed. If there is any fragments of the old ones still in there, they need to come out.
 
at least for sure i can say that there is nothing in the impeller. i will verify the pto to see but do not recall seeing anything

I have both on my skis I like the carbon seals WAY better.
