98 GTX LTD rebuild engine question about raves

The Seadoo I inherited had the engine rebuilt before it was stored, nine years ago. My mom said they ran it for only about 20 hrs or less. Now that I am redoing some of the damaged wires/fuel lines etc... I replaced one of the rave valves because it had a good size nick on it and they are cheap to replace. Now that I am thinking about everything, I am not sure how they rebuild these engines. I am wondering if the rave may be too long for a rebuilt engine. Anyone out there know what the standard practice was, around 10 years ago? Any easy way to check?

It has always been the same. If you bore the cylinders you need to make sure the pistons have enough clearance to not hit the raves.

If they ran the engine the raves distance/clearance is fine.
I replaced one of the rave valves due to damage. I guess I will have to take it out and measure it against the one I replaced to see if it is longer. What is the average bore for this engine....about 3mm or 4 mm?

That's a wrinkle. I'm fortunate to have a supply of pistons and cylinders in my pile but I know people that fit the valve for 1mm overbore if they are not positive of piston size.

Bore sizes are (.25mm), (.5mm), (.75mm), and (1mm) and people go larger than that. On rave valve length (.25mm) cylinder bore is (.005") off the cylinder wall so the rave will be (.005") closer to the piston and so forth. You can see a lot of the piston when you pull the rave and look down the spark plug hole. You have a good chance of seeing the size stamped on the piston. You really need the piston size to get it right but it is doable either way. Good Luck !

The 98 was my introduction to the 951 engine in a GTX. Lots of power over the 787. I can't bring myself to swap out our 787 GTXs for the 951 but I am often tempted. :D The GTX is my favorite all around ski. Be careful when order parts for the 1998 model. Some parts only fit the 98. Good luck.

I restored this one last year. sweet !! Funny tid bit, on the nose of the ski is an "A" Alabama Crimson Tide sticker. I live in Louisiana and there is a big rivalry there. People hate Alabama and I sold the ski to a lady she said "That's the first thing coming off of that ski." LOL The previous owner told me the ski was worth $200 more with that sticker. LOL I always have fun !! :D
