Hi everyone I picked up a gsx Ltd 951 tonight. I’m familiar with the 787s but not so much on these. A little background is the ski has sat for the last ten years. Guy said it had a freshly rebuilt motor installed and never even got a chance to ride it before he was deployed in the military. So hopefully everything internally stayed lubed up. I did pull the plugs and turn the crank by hand. It spin freely. They said they tried to start it a couple years ago and tried jumping the solenoid and only got a click and never no crank. What do you guys recommend for a starting spot to start diagnosing? Fresh battery and see if it cranks itself over?

A fresh, fully charged battery is essential before you start diagnosing anything. The first thing to do before you spend any more money on it is check compression. If compression is good, you’re going to want to make sure any grey tempo lines left in the ski are replaced with standard automotive type lines and that you have fresh clean fuel in the tank. Then clean and rebuild the carbs with genuine Mikuni rebuild kits and new needles and seats. Follow the carb rebuild sticky in the forum. I would also change your oil filter and make sure you have the correct synthetic API-TC oil in the tank. That should get you up and running and avoid any trouble down the road.

Thanks Jermey I guess I should have reworded my question to ask where do I start to figure out the click with no crank. I can’t do the compression check without it cranking. I’m thinking either solenoid or starter issue from what the PO was telling me. Probably clean it up and pull starter clean connections and get it load tested to see if it’s any good. I only run seadoo oil in my skis and the carb rebuild I will be sending to my guy off the seadoo page on Facebook named David. He is everyone’s go to it seems like and just did my 787 carbs freaking perfect with new needles seats springs and jets!

Well the first thing to do is get a good battery in it. Once that’s out of the way you need to see if the MPEM is recognizing the dess key. Do you get two beeps when you put the lanyard on the post? If so, you can move on to jumping the starter solenoid with a screwdriver. If it turns over with the solenoid jumped, your starter is working properly and you’ll be looking at either a solenoid replacement or a wiring issue. If it doesn’t turn over, you want to rebuild the OEM starter.
