Just bought a 97 XP , guy told me every 10-15 hours his brother had to adjust the carbs to keep it running right because thats the way waverunners are.

I test drove it and it bogged down when I went full throttle. I Googled till I found this site and read alot.

What I've done so far...

New plugs

Cleaned both carbs -including internal carb filters which looked like they had growth inside and out, extremely dirty

Cleaned main fuel filter- again extremely dirty

Plug closest to handlebars was kinda wet so i switched it with the other and ran the same, pulled the wire to that plug, ran it and didnt have any change in how it ran. So the carb feeding that cylinder maybe way off?

Running it on a hose it still seems to bog at full throttle...

I need to rerun the grey feul lines completely this winter but for the few warm weeks we have left I want to run it.

So I'm thinking I need to set the carbs , can anyone show me a picture of the low side / high side screws on the carbs?

Can the oil injector be adjusted also?

Now that the carbs are clean and ready I just need to undue whatever the first guy did to the settings I think.

Welcome,

First... the guy you got it from was an idiot. you shouldn't have to touch it. If it's requiring a tweak every 10 to 15 hr's... then things need fixed.

Knowing that you have gray lines... and the system is dirty... replace all of them NOW. They decay, and send green goo into the carbs. Along with changing the hoses, you will need to make sure the fuel select valve is clean. (the on/off/reserve valve) If you continue to try to run the ski with those hoses... you will just be chasing your tail, and could kill the engine. You will spend a bunch of time cleaning things... but those hoses will just send more crap into the carbs, and filters. (wasted time to re-clean parts) It will only take an hour to change the hoses.

When you cleaned the carbs... did you check the pop-off pressure? Most people over look that, and assume it's OK. Also, when you cleaned the carbs, did you verify that EVERY internal passage was clear? I alternate between carb cleaner and compressed air, until I know that everything is clear.

Also... since they last guys liked to mess with the carbs... I would verify what jets are in the carbs. (they may have changed them)

The low speed needle is toward the bottom of the carb, on the same side as the throttle linkage, and the high speed needle is toward the top, on the other side of the carb.

Your low needle should be at 1-3/4 turns out, and the high should be at 0 turns out. (closed)

And finally... yes, the oil injection can be adjusted. Once you get a stable idle... there is a line scribed on the round part of the arm, and on the pump body. just make sure they are lined up.

Thank you. Carbs are both set at 1 1/2 out low side, they ran rough at 1 3/4.

I have about 3 weeks left of nice weather here so with my fresh carb cleaning I'm going to enjoy the waverunner and redo all the gas lines this winter.

I adjusted the idle screw a little because it was kinda high - moved instantly when you started it.

The bogging/popping at half throttle is gone and it revs up as far as I squeeze the trigger now.

I think I managed to fake my way through another project.

Awesome forum here, a wealth of information. Thanks
