Well, the 2 plates that come with the tool are 3/16" steel with brass bushing insert, and the shaft is solid steel, and about 5 ft long, and the length of the box makes it awkward as hell to haul in off the front porch. I ended up opening it inside and carrying the pieces out to the garage one at a time to make it easier. Its heavy

Ok maybe this picture is not giving me a good representation of what it is then. Looks like getting one of these is my next step.

Remove the battery and charge it, sounds to me like the battery doesn't have enough nuts to turn over the engine. I assume the engine will turn over my hand w/o the plugs in it.

So it's all put back together, and this video shows what is happening. Any ideas on what is the problem now?

Mine is a 96, but still mine did this as well. I charged the battery and it still didn't have enough nuts to turn it over more than once. Put in my AGM here in this vid, STILL didn't have enough juice.

So charged up the AGM, and squirted some gas down the throats of the carbs. OH FYI if you haven't got fuel all the way to the carbs make sure to drop some premix down the throats of the carbs. It'll start MUCH faster and not cook the starter.

what is a good battery go get for a 97XP that will fit in the box? The one i have is a lawn mower battery and its too big.

The one I have is an AGM that you can get from Advance Auto. Has about 325CCA if I recall correctly.

Thanks guys, I am hoping it is the battery but the starter had a lot of work last season with carb issues and I did not have a primer so my other thought is it may be worn down. Last option might be that the drive shaft / jet pump is locked up some how and causing it to not turn over. I may take the jet pump off and see if it turns over easier or at all with it off.

I did not have much success using the alignment tool. I was aligned from the pump to the rear drive shaft, but I did not take out the rear drive shaft and put the alignment tool all the way up to the engine PTO. That did not seem like it would help since the 97 XP has the middle section with a coupler at both ends that has some play in it. Anyone who has done a 97 XP and used the tool know if you need to remove all of the front drive shaft and put the alignment tool all the way to the engine side PTO?

I found this thread http://www.**************/forums/showthread.php?t=14606 and it did not show it going up that far, but this does not appear to be a 97 XP either.

last night i took out the plugs and it turns over, but with the plugs in, it just clicks. What does that tell you ? I'm thinking starter at this point.

Check your cables/connections to the starter. Wiggle the cables around, especially close to the connections; if you feel a grinding inside the cable, replace it. I am not sure where it is located on your model, but you can normally wrench across the starter solenoid ( always mess up that word) posts (big red connections) to eliminate or confirm it as a problem.
