i have a 97 xp. it wont start ran great when i stored it. it has a new starter. i pulled the plugs tried to start it. nada. sometimes the little box in front portside clicks. sometimes it doesnt. how do i try to turn the shaft by hand? where do i try it from. behind the seat or un der the handle bars? do i need tools?

Remove the drive cover to expose the PTO wheel. Then you can turn by hand if you have plugs out. A wing nut on each side secures it. Go buy a new battery. BE careful
to not touch cables backwards (polarity). Check the fuel routeing, you probly should
discard the old gas, put new in and prime the circulatory lines. Dribble a little pre-mix gas into the *plug holes new BR8ES *plugs gap .021, and a little dribble into the airbox Fogging hole. Start it up, just 20-25 secounds off the hose MAX. Bills86e

Do your annul rave & filter cleaning maintenance and grease the zerk on PTO.

by looking at the pic you sent me, the cover you are talking about is represented by number 41? and if so am i looking for what i would consider traditional wing nuts? if that is so i dont see any wing nuts. should they pop right out to me when i look?

alright. i was able to turn the shaft. easily. i then pressed the start button. it then turned over for about half a second. i hit the button again and all it did was click. it clicks from the little box in front portside. it sometimes will click when i hit the button. sometimes it wont. new battery. new starter. what else can it be?

Jumper the two solrnoid lugs, if it cranks, the Solenoid is Bad! If it does not the battery cable lugs are bad.
