Hey guys, could really use any and all advice. 97 XP with 787. Was running kind of sluggish from a dead stop.. would bog alot before it got going. Replaced the stock gray fuel lines, cleaned filters in the carbs, put in an inline fuel filter (just a cheap one from auto parts store for lawn mowers or whatever), cleaned selector valve etc.

It ran like twice, still not right though but was rideable. It then sat for about 3 weeks or so. Went to start it up on the trailer before going out and it wouldnt start. Took a while and finally did, ran maybe 10 sec at a time and would die. Didnt sound right, smelled funny.

Pulled everything and found that in the fuel lines/carb/sel valve, all the fuel was like bright orange colored. No idea why..any idea what could have turned the fuel orange?

The gas in the tank was not discolored at all.

We pulled all of the lines off, cleaned all of the lines, cleaned selector valve, took carbs most of the way apart to clean the filters, diaphrams, etc. Idle screw backed out all the way (so idle shoudl be very low or none). High speed/low speed set at stock..

Fired right up, but went straight to very high revving (no tac on this model). Shut it off. Noticed that the exhaust got pretty warm right away (didnt run longer than 5-10 seconds). Is that normal???? Never really had a need to feel it before right after starting so im not sure.

Made sure the idle adjustment was all the way out and that the throttle cable wasnt being pulled. First reaction was that it was sucking air, most likely from the carbs. Pulled them off again, cleaned everything up, sealed back up w/ gaskets and some high temp oil resistent RTV... again made sure that the throttle plates were closed and stuff.

Still revving high right away. I have no idea what else to look at. No idea what could be causing this. It seems to run clean and crisp.. but just very high idle. Giving it gas, it does accelerate, but just revving to the moon!

Any ideas? Tomorrow I think I'm going to try bypassing the selector valve, because it seemed like maybe it was a little clogged. I can't remember but if I recall cleaning it on my old ski, I could shoot carb cleaner in and watch it come straight on.. on this one it trickles out a little bit, but doesnt flow out as much as I think it maybe should be.? other than that i have no idea.

any help would be appreciated very much. its definitly and air/fuel issue somewhere, but what could it be?

Set the carbs back to stock settings on your LSA and the HSA. Looks like you've eliminated the carbs sucking air. Sometimes these things tend to try and runaway on ya when there's no pressure on the pump. If it runs fine in the water dont worry to much about it..

Check the linkage and make sure it isnt getting stuck!

again its only letting me post a few paragraphs at a time.. what the...:willy_nilly: so sorry..but here goes

Update..

First thing we did was spray some wd40 around the base of the carbs right after we started it to check for any change in idle, indicating an air leak.. no change. Kind of rules that out I think?

well, it wont let me type any more than 1 line so here is an image lol.. no idea what the deal is

I just did my 99 gsx and same thing happened to me! I am going crazy :willy_nilly: I pulled this thing apart 4 times already! Have you figured yours out yet? Also I just got mine a week ago and it would start and run fine prior to me pulling it apart until you got on it. I found the filters in both carbs completly full of grey line stuff! Thanks for your help.
