Hello all im new here :)
I just bought a 97 XP 800. The first couple times out all was good. Then once in a while it would die while driving. All I would have to do is pull off the lanyard put it back on get 2 beeps and start. The last time I went out it died. But I could not get it going again. Towed it home. Played on trailer in yard. Still couldnt get it to go. Did some reading and found that DESS post tend to go. So I ordered a new DESS and installed. Tried no luck. The next day I brought to dealer to program my new DESS key. As you know (but I didnt) you cant because it wasnt comunicating with the MPEM. So the repair guy told me to check continuity on the 3 wires from DESS post to the clip where it goes into the MPEM. Did that last night. All 3 lead are good to clip. Then I used contact cleaner and a toothbrush to clean all the contacts on the two plugs (on clips and MPEM). Dried and tried. She got double beep and fired up. So started putting everything back together. After all done wanted to fell like the man to wife and show how I had fixed it.... and you know...no F'n go. What next peeps? Can a MPEM be intermitent when screwed (or is MPEM something that when screwed just dont work)? Or is it just wiring (grounds)? I went through all wires and fuses. All looks good... Clueless HELP

First we need some clarification to be sure this is electrical. Can you give us some specifics on what "not getting it to go" means? Is the two beeps intermittent?

No 2 beeps. Will not start.
So sum it up
- keyed on/off (installed at dealer to prevent battery drain when not in use) beside vts when on all gauges turn on and read properly. Vts moves.

-brand new DESS post. (Worked couple times since install so know its good)

-tested continuaty between post and clip. good on all three wires.

- cleaned all contacts at MPEM.

-fuses are all good.

-battery fully charged and brand new.

-if seleniod is jumped it turns over.

It sounds like possibly two problems. Bad beeper and bad solenoid. Will it fire up and run when you jump the solenoid?

Also, there has been a lot of posters here that have ended up thinking they had a brand new fully charged battery when it was bad straight out of the box. I suggest load testing it. If the voltage is not high enough the MPEM will not work.

Beep works when i do the start button 5 times. I get the 1 short 1 long beeps. When jumping the soleniod it turn over strong. But no spark. Just threw multimeter on bat 12.8v

bad mpem, or bad on/off switch harness, check your connectors at the mpem. Just went through this myself.

I tested the DESS post with multimeter from clip at mpem with and without lanyard. Got the results i was suposed to acording to repair manual. As for the start stop when I push it 5 times i get the 1 short 1 long so i didnt bother putting the multimeter in it. But i will just in case. Where are all the grounds i should be looking at?

Just put mutlimeter on start stop leads at mpem clip. All is good there.

Battery 12.8v
dess post good
start stop good
buzzer good
fuses good
cleaned contact and plus at mpem
turn when jump soleniod
look for loose wires at clips or dirty good ( from what i can see)

So it has to be ground or mpem right?
Where are all the grounds i should check. Is there anything else i should check before ordering mpem?

For 150.00 in parts I just cut out the mpem on my 96 speedster and re wired it. Runs great and saved me 1000.00 bucks. And you never need to worry about the mpem again.

Your not getting past the dess post, it should read the key. If you get beeps when pressing the start button then you need to look at why your mpem is not reading the key, like I said went through this EXACT situation and it was my on/off vts switch wires and had to change out that harness in order for my mpem to read the key.

your ground is good if your starter is turning over, the motor is ground from the front connection into the stator cover housing, and also from the starter.

you simply are having a issue with the key not being read. If you had a key programmed then you know that your mpem is good.

PROBLEMS SOLVED.... YOOHOO :)
Back in the water in time for my cabin rental
I was gettin worried
Many thanks to all tha helped me out

Minnetonka4me amazing seller... youll be hearin from me
again. Hopefully not too soon lol.

Glad to here. What was the resolution?

Replaced the wires from start stop switch to mpem clip.
Replaced the wires DESS post to mpem clip.

I did continuity test by the repair manual and they showed up goid
but i guess they were intermitant. Im gona price a new harness and if any electrical
issues arise just swap it out. Thanks again bro. This site ROCKS
