Have cleaned all connecters, checked start/stop & lanyard post & ign. coil with ohms reader checked out good.Have fresh oil in res. for sensor to read.Put Dess key in get 2 beeps turns over fine just no spark.tried new plugs and a new ign. coil no luck.Took out dess key waited 5sec. press start, oil light worked for the 33 secs. gauge never went up though.Unhooked red & black wire from VTS because back box starts to smoke when the fuse is connected. So prob. has some water damage in it but dont think it req. to be hooked up to get fire.Ground wire tight on block ran another ground to one of the two proms on top of the power box.Didnt test stator or rectifier, because i think it will still run with those bad just wont have any charge.Could be wrong.Battery has great voltage.Dont know how test mpem figured since i get two beeps and it tries to start its prob good.I do have a manual..I'm not familiar with the dess safety feature.Have no gas in tank i spray mix gas straight in carbs that way it dont flood out...and plugs do get wet..found some thread on this prob but they never tell how they solved it..one guy said he had a bad ground to mpem and found a broke trigger..How does block ground transfer to mpem..dont know what trigger he means...any help would be GREATFUL...thanks

The triggers in the Magnito houseing on the '97's were poorly made and often broke. Seadoo later beefed up the triggers on over the counter sales as a fix. MPEMs were also poorly positioned in the ski and made subject to water damage. I bet your problem can be found in the Stator.
Loosen front engine mount, wood block up the engine. I would probably remove the 2 allen bolts holding on the oil pump and leave it hanging by the cable and remove the cover. It will feel like it is kind of stuck because the magnets from the flywheel are drawing on it. Pull Cover straight out and the stator will be attached to the cover. If you see some of the windings are a different color than others there is your problem. Your stator has a dead short.
The Cup protrusion should be aligned with the guide timing hole in the flywheel.

thanks for the quick reply Dr. Bill. maybe I should have checked the stator was thinking it was like motorcycles and can run with a bad one just no charge.Have a guy from a seadoo shop operating on it now.If he cant get it going. Ill check the trigger and stator. If he fixes it Ill reply the cure thanks for viewing..

Hi, if the trigger coil mount hasn't broke, then your problem could be like my ski, the cdi was not sending the pulse to the coil so it can fire, check the white wire for voltage at the coil first while cranking, it should pulse with voltage if the cdi box is working right. I dont think the stator plays any part of the ignition system on these 787's.......

skinapped it back from sea-doo shop, they said they were a month behind in work.So looks like im sponsored by NIKE"JUST DO IT" your self..going to check trigger and voltage on white wire..so the trigger can cause no firing if broken, and if there's no voltage at white wire is there anyway to check MPEM..update later today.THANKS

hey, the trigger sends a pulse signal to the cdi box that inturns send a higher voltage pulse to the coil via the white wire, now there are several connection points along the white wire so if your trigger coil is not broke and it ohms correct(test in service manual) but you still get no voltage at the coil(white wire on coil) check the connection for the white wire leading back from the coil to the cdi box. I think you can also check the trigger pules wire to the cdi(black/Y wire on my 96 gsx) for a small voltage pulse while cranking to verify a signal is going to the cdi box, You can test the mpem doing the ohms test in the manual but i dont think it is part of the ignition system, at least getting fire to the coil but the cdi box does, thats what I had to replace on my ski to get spark

Check White wire no pulse check ground voltage to coil posts and both coil proms reads the same as battery so guess ground is good..time to check trigger..i have a 96 xp but mpem boxes are diff. my 97 is thin 10"x10" with six fuse 3 spare 1vts 7.5 /1mpem 5/1charge 15.. my 96 has a big box that opens like my starter relay box..so will the test be the same..thanks

i dont think you should be worried with the mepm at this point. do like bill advised and check for a broken trigger coil mount

Ok stator off everything looks mounted firm but there is a bunch of shavings stuck to black sensor that i think is a crank sensor maybe wrong looks like magneto was scrubbing on stator.Ohm the stator connecter reads on case grd. to solid black wire, and all 3 solid yellow wires read to each other. No reading when tested grd. to any of the 3 yellow wires. And no reading when testing sensor wires together and to case grd.Still confused about trigger is the the sensor i see..i also see thread about a fuse in rear box and i dont see one am i blind or is that a urban legend..thanks

Stator coils colors look the same no burnt wire,Does have black tops on each coil where the magneto scrub it..would shaving on sensor cause it

I'm joining this thread because I have the same problem. 96 XP 787, beeps and cranks, but no spark. I believe the coil ohms out ok (i'm getting .6 across both spayed connectors.

I'm looking at the trigger wire too. With the pos. lead on the white wire and ground on the battery ground, I get - volts when I switch and put pos. lead on the pos. term of battery I get +volts. I get 22volts when key is put on and they slowly drop off.

Sorry for the thread hyjack, I just thought it would be easier to join in on the same conversation.

Sorry to butt in but I am curious to know what a stator is? I've seen this typed in several different threads. I've never seen one indexed in the shop manual.

Do you mean starter???

Thank from a newbie, Tim

A stator is the stationary part of the electrical motor/generator that generates the power used to run the motor and electronics.

Thanks,
I found it listed under electrical system in the manual. I'm re-reading the whole book to acquaint myself with what I've seen in these threads......never too old to learn.

LOL Np on people joining any knowledge is power.Havent had time to remove stator off my 96 and swap with 97 to see if that fix the prob.seems like thats the cure from others. thought the stator was only for charging but thread under 97 gs no spark said stator did the trick.I know my mpem box on 97 is diff. than 96 but it says stator is the same..how can you check trigger"pick up" sensor ohm both wires and got nothing. thanks will reply if any news comes up

There is a small wire that comes from the top of the rear elec box that grounds the coil,if not hooked up to the battery ground or broken it will turn over but not fire.
It can be,its easy to check, take a test light & hook theclip end to the positive battery post & take the prob & touch the grounding post where all the black ground wires go to,if it lights up you got ground,no light no ground, touch it to the motor & see if it grounded also.

The biggest electrical problems are poor grounds, mostly due to the ground cable getting rotten due to water exposure & poor mounting point on motor (its mounted to low on the motor),it needs to be mounted higher on the motor to prevent water intrusion.

On the 800 there is a extra 10mm bolt hole right next to the exhaust manifold,I use that hole with a new bolt & it keeps water from getting to it as easy.

Seems stator is good none of the 3 yellow wire are grounded...But i read... White/Yellow to Black: 220 ohms (Trigger coil)...Is that true because i get nothing when i ohm that sensor could that be the prob. Hard to get a answer for electrical in manual they jump subjects to much..have extra ground ran to block..i do have ground at coil just no power at white wire...do get two beeps and turns over...Thanks
