i have the twin 717's...when i throttle up from idle, i have to do so very slowly because at 2500 rpm the passengr engine dies if i jut gun it. if i wait for it to hit 3000, i can peg it no prob.
Also, when im cruising at say 6k rpm, the passenger engine is about 500 to 1000 rpm hgher than the other. i cheked and they both engage with the same amount of throttle. it's like one is slipping.

The passenger engine als cavitates upontakeoff and I've changed thedriveshaft, cabon ring and metalring as well......

Your fist problem is fuel. It sounds like you need to rebuild the carbs on the port engine.

As far as the speeds being off... that's kind of normal. In many of the boats... they use a lower pitch impeller on the port engine to help with low speed. Also... with the carb issue... it can be throwing the RPM's off... but it is almost impossible to get them both exact.

And finally... the cavitation. The carbon seal is only one place you can draw air. It's normally the cause of very bad cavitation... but you can draw air around the pump or ride shoe.

shuld i try to run them at the same speed when cruising or the same throttle position??

I had the same boat and i actually had a very same problem as far as the engine just cutting out. The issue mine ended up being was the carb was not adjusted correctly and it needed to be rebuilt. I had to bring it to a shop to get the carbs adjusted correctly and rebuilt and after that the boat was 100%!!!!!

As for the RPM's being different when the throttle sticks are the same, it should just be a simple setting in the throttle. Our 97' Challenger had that problem, just a little screw that can be tuned.

but they engage at the same time leading me to believe the props have 2 different pitches

+1 Mine are the same sometimes but not always. At full throttle, they are very close. You can adjust them or leave them alone. Sometimes they are quite a bit off. It also makes the boat track to one side or the other. Something that must just be part of the way it is set up. There are different part numbers on the impellers on mine so they must be different pitches.

I would verify that the 2 engines are sync'ed.... but normally, they don't run at the same speed. Just run the throttle together.
