hello all ... im new here .. i jsut bought a 97 seadoo xp .. hulls in great shape and the motor did turn over and started for liek 2 secs and then died i think it is dirty carbs ... but i went to start it and the start broke in 2 .. the shaft snaped ... it looks liek the orginal starter.. girl i bought it from kept good care of it .. i jsut buffed the entire seadoo and striped all stickers a new seat will be coming also from ebay

now i have some questions ... were the carbs are .. i see a black plastic box im guessing is the intake ... this is my first boat but im very mechanicly inclinded... im thinking there should be some sort of filter in this box no? becasue i opened it and took it off o pullt he starter and there is no filter int here just a open box also the 9 gear starter will work on this seadoo cause thats what i orderd? last what kinda mix do i put in this thing .. the girl says she put a block off plate in it so i kno it doesnt mix itself

i have brand new starter ..sparkplugs.. carb rebuild kit and starter soleniod coming to make sure evrything is good .... what eles u guys suggest to do with it ?

Remove the black box and you should see the carbs. The black box should have a spark arestor as a filter. Remove that and the bottom of the black box comes off to reveal the carbs.

If it still has the gray tempo fuel lines replace them too. Also clean fuel selector and vent check valves Do not crank with cleaned carbs until they are replaced.

Fuel mixture for premix is 40:1. But make sure oil tank still has oil in it for rotary valve.

x2! Look after it, and it will look after you. Perhaps its time to change the oil in the jet pump too.

i was gna say the same thing on the jet pump i just picked up a 96 xp and the oil in pump was burnt black and was down like maybe 2 oil caps full of oil.ppl just dnt kno how to service these things they just get on and ride it till they break.also check your wear ring if u decide to pull the pump off u can change that out while your in there if need be.not sure if 97s have them but also check to see if your carbon seal is good too, that and the wear ring being worn will cause cavitation.go thru and clean the rave valves out aswell u will need new gaskets for them too sometimes they tear and the waterbox rave aswell.

well i did take the black box off to get to the starter ... it was like 6 clips the lid came off an then 4 bolts inside but wen i took the lid off u can see right into a square hole and see the 2 metal circles on the carbs when u pull the choke they close ... i was thinking a filter should be over that no ?

as for grey fuel lines yea there still in there lol what shoudl i replace those with ? napa fuel line or do they make seadoo fuel line kit some were?

as for the fuel selector thats the knob on the side right that u turn gas on off and go to res ? and the ven check vavles are the rave valve right under the black circles ontop the motor ? if so i cleaned those

last tank has oil in it

thanx man i apprciate the reply!

well it loooks like some one did some work on the jet pump .... im no expert but it looks like some one put in one of those aftermarket propellors in and the ring around it is black and looks aloot newer then the skid plate on the bottom .. i can grease that back fittin which i havent yet ... it looks like a grease fitting ... as for the rave vavles i cleaned the 2 on the motor and they were black and the metal circle spring was off but nothing was ripped

Congrats on your new Doo! I have a '98 model XP-L. Like was stated before just go ahead and do the jet pump service...only takes about 30 minutes if your mechanically inclined, mine was supposedly serviced but when I cracked the velocity cone off there was hardly any oil in it and was tar black coming out. Change those fuel lines!!! Get some gates line from napa and ease your mind about your fuel system, there is a full write up on doing this on here, those will be the death of your doo if you leave them. High maintenance but alot of fun! Good luck with it!!:thumbsup:photo.jpg

When u cleaned the raves did u clean the guillotines or only under the black caps. I would still go ahead and service the pump better safe then sorry. Yes the knob where u switch from on/off reserve is the fuel selector. I used fuel line from oreillys not sure what it was called.

No the check valves on the fuel system vents and the rave valves are separate items. When replacing your fuel lines you will find two vent hoses.
One passes through the hull under the seat. At the thru-hull there is a check valve (inlet) that lets air in, but prevents fuel from exiting in a roll over. Blow it out with a air chuck and check for proper function. Should be able to blow air in one direction and not the other. Re-install in proper orientation. The other vent hose will run to a thru-hull just underneath the rub-rail by the pee-hole. This thru-hull will contain a pressure relief valve (outlet) to prevent over pressurization in the fuel system. It should open at 1.5 psi in one direction and be closed in the other direction. This valve can become stuck from the green goo from deteriation of the gray fuel lines so it may require some cleaning other than air. Re-install in proper orientation.

thanx again every one do u guys have that write up on the fuel lines? and the pump rebuilt ? and i will defintly check the check valves
