Just bought a 97 GTX 787 (dual carb) and working to get it back on the water. Compression is 115 to 120 on both cylinders. Took the readings with two gauges and both read close to the same range ie nothing below 115 and nothing above 125.

It starts one time (garage), Does not rev well at all. throttle resp is bad. After shutting off, it will not restart without drying out (assume flooding, plugs are wet), then will restart. PO says he just overhauled carbs.

So, I planned on going back thru the carbs and cleaning Raves, but needed advise on whether I should just go ahead and pull the top end based on the comp readings??
Thanks for the Help!!

The compression is too low, you should have 150+ in each hole. You are going to at least need a top-end rebuild. Depending on hours/condition you may need a complete rebuild.

Thanks Ankeneneyou!!
What hours would prompt a complete rebuild??
Has about 1100 hours on it and from the looks of the bolts the top end has been off "at least once".
cheers

110 or 1100? 1100 is a ton of hours and you are probably on complete rebuild #3 or so if that's the case. There are procedures on the repair manuals to check the crankshaft to determine if it's within spec. Since you have no way of knowing real hours on the bottom end, I'd personally do a complete rebuild.

If it's 110 hours you should be able to get away with just a top end, provided the crank looks good.

Thanks for the advise, pulling the top end and checking out crank!!
Will check the hours again to make sure I am reading it right. But AZ has a really long riding season. LOL
And this thing is 20 years old.
cheers and many thanks
