Hey guys, so I took a ride on my jetski and it was running great. We got off and grabbed some lunch and when we got back on there was just a buzzing type noise when we tried to start it. Bought a brand new battery just in case ans still nothing. Put in a new solenoid and the same. Checked battery with voltmeter and I get 12.8, checked the wires to the solenoid 12.8. What should I checkwd next? Is this the starter?

It's the starter or the bendix is jammed against the flywheel. Start with the starter.... not sure if bendix is built into that year starter, buy I believe so

check to be sure you are getting voltage to the start when you press the start button first. If it has power when the button it pressed and it won't turn over then I would be sure the engine turns over by hand and isn't locked up for some reason, then go with the starter.

Are you also getting 12.8 volts on the OUTPUT side of the solenoid when you press START with the lanyard attached?

12.8 I believe was with the lanyard in but no start button. So I went for the starter and took it out to test with another battery, turns fine however there is aomwthing at the tip I'm not sure if it's a problem or not. I can't see how yo attach a photo but its at the very top of the starter, the metal ring around it is bent and sticking out. Is that a problem? What should I look at , at this point if not?

Chester had me do a load test on the battery. It showed good 12.8 voltage but when I put a load on it the voltage was 2v.
My Starter solenoid was buzzing when I hit start.

Put the volt meter on the battery and hit start and read your voltage. I bought a battery from the dealer that was weak didn't last 90 days

Ok, anybody had the problem of the metal ring around the tip of the starter bent up? Assuming now maybe I did it when taking it out. Maybe ill try putting it back in and checking all the wiring, do I need to hit start each time before checking each wire?

you can test the starter by putting 12 volts directly to it by jumping the solenoid (as long as it 12 volts on one side) or taking it out and bench testing it with a good battery by grounding the body and putting 12 volts to the 12v terminal (assuming these are grounded by the body). if starter spins freely then it is likely the starter solenoid or possibly the start button. testing to see if when button is pushed you get voltage to the solenoid will tell you if the button is working. I don't know this actual machine but most starting systems are the same.

The bent up thing has me concerned. It does not sound correct. But you can wire it back up, and lay it in the ski to test. You do not have to go through the pain of installing it to the motor. But you may need to put a temp ground from the battery to the motor. Not sure.

Thanks so much for the help guys, very much appreciated. So this is where I'm at. Put the starter back in, hit start and it turned over like half a spin then just started doing the buzzing type noise. Took the cover off the drive shaft, or whatever the technical term is, and I cant spin it like I used to be able to. Took cover off bottom of propeller and couldn't turn that as well, although iy was hard to get a grip on. I'm going to do what you guys mentioned and let you know how it goes. I would mention that the battery in there I just picked up from dealer. Anyways ill try checking battery and lwt you know. Thanks again guys

So you know the button is operational, now jump the starter solenoid with a screwdriver or jumper cables big post to big post, if it sparks and still no movement on the starter then I would say the starter is locked up (if the battery is good). If when you jump the solenoid she spins freely then your solenoid is junk.
