97 GTX Sluggish out of the hole

I have a 97 GTX one owner. We don't get to use it but a few times a year now. Last time out it ran worse than it's usually sluggish performance. This ski has been a pain since new. I suspected water in gas so I cleaned the fuel tank and filter on fuel pick up. It was a little better, but out of the hole all I could get was 5200 rpm and then it would finally hit 5800 and take off. This has been pretty common for the past couple years. During my test ride I could get it revved up to 6500+/- by putting it in neutral, then slamming it in forward and it would drop back to 5200 for a slow take off. I read that dirty carbs can cause this, so I cleaned the carbs and changed the fuel lines to and on the carbs. The filters were probably 50% plugged but the carbs seamed clean. Tested it and it was better. Sometimes it would rev to 5500 and then fall back some to 5300. Still better than before. This time when I revved it up in neutral then slammed it in forward it would drop back to 5800 and take off strong. It should accellerate to that point from idle. I checked compression. I got 140 on Mag and 137 on PTO. However, it took forever to max out. It would take at least a minute to max. I stopped midway to let the starter rest. Pressure did not drop back that much while resting. Any suggestions.

If the engine is cranking at normal speed... you should see max pressure in just a couple revolutions. (or with in a few PSI of max)

The compression you posted is OK... and wouldn't be causing the issue you have. I'm suspecting that the carbs aren't working properly. They need to come off, and everything checked over. A quick visual is not good enough. They need a full disassembley, and every passage needs to be checked. (Alternate carb cleaner, and compressed air) Then, when they go back together, verify pop-off pressure, and leak down.

Also... when was the last time the RAVE valves were serviced? If they are stuck, and not opening... the RPM's will hang in the mid 5000 range.

Speaking of sticking RAVE valves... what kind of oil are you using?

That engine running properly should be peaking at about 6800/6900 on the water.

I checked compression on one with fresh charge, charged the battery overnight and checked the other.

I did disaasemble carbs, but could not get one of the the valves off to access the jets. I was hopeful the dirty filters would fix the issue. how do you verify pop-off pressure and leak down. I assume it is probably in the service manual which I do have on CD.

During the process of testing I did check to see if they were both free. They were replaced under recall and then I have replaced one a couple years ago. I clean them every year. I will check them again.

I use QuickSilver full synthetic spec'ed for Seadoo. I had trouble with the RAVE valves when I used Seadoo oil. I have had trouble with the RAVE valves since it was new.

When you get it at full speed it does max out at around 6800/6900. Getting there is the problem.

Runs good until engine warms up.

I cleaned the Rave valves again even though they moved freely. I also got a new set of plugs, but wanted to wait until I burned off the oil from the compression test. I put it in the water and after about 30 seconds of letting it warm up it accelerated good turning about 5800 rpms out of the hole. It accelerated good 3-4 more times. Then each time after that it turned less rpms until it settled in on 5200 everytime after that. The new plugs did not make a differnece. This reminded me that the past few years, the first couple times you start off it runs great. After it warms up it goes back to sluggish.

That could be the problem. If you put oil in the cyl to check the compression... then you got false numbers. A compression check is done on a cold engine... with no extra oil.

Do the the check again... and give us the numbers. I'm thinking that, without the extra oil... you will be around 120 or less.... and that's the issue.

I did not put oil in the cyl. Please note that it took at least a minute to get max pressure on compression test. Turning it over for that long with throttle open would pump oil through injectors. That is the oil I wanted to burn up first. My compression tests were on cold engine. I still can't figure why it would take that long to get max pressure. Also what is the purpose of taking out both plugs? Before I read about taking both plugs out, I took one out at a time and left the plug wire on the other plug. Pressure built up much quicker that way. With the other plug firing once in a while, it seemed to turn over easier than with both plugs out.
Thanks again for your comments.
