Why would a 97 GTX keep blowing the 5Amp fuse.

If I replace it, it will not pop when its dormant, push the start/stop 2x to activate the gauges, or when you put the lanyard on.

It will pop after it cranks over 2-3 times or even IIRC when the battery was weak and could not crank over the engine. It only seems to pop when you engage the starter.

When I get home I will see what happens when I disconnect the stator and/or rectifier. I just wanted to see if any one had any other ideas.

dont unplug the stator, but unplug (either red and/or yellow, then hit start button) the yellow wires and red wire at the rectifier.

Well with the 3 yellow and 1 red wire(s) unplugged it sill pops the fuse.

Could it be the Start stop switch shorting out?

Last year I did have a problem with a loose connection at the starter solenoid too. I had to take the plug apart and tighten the metal connection. But right now I have to run to AutoZone to stock up on 5amp fuses.

Another Discussion

There is another discussion on the 5amp fuse blowing constantly, and they were looking at a diode inside the box. There are pictures of what I am talking about with some other symptoms that you may want to check out. It was a pretty informative thread about the subject. You should have a look at that one to see if there are similarities (sp) with your issue. It's worth a look.

Well I got it running! I disconnected the starting relay (solenoid) and pushed the start/stop button and naturally nothing happened; the fuse didn’t blow either. I plugged it back in and it cranked for longer time before it blew the fuse.

For the heck of it I swapped the relays between the XP and the GTX and the GTX started right up. The XP just clicked a few times, and had to be coaxed to start. I'm thinking I may go ahead and replace the wire harness in the rear electrical box and the relay just to be on the safe side.

I did have to get towed in today though, but that was because I sucked the tow rope into the pump.
