I have a 97 gti that has no spark. It was running all weekend at the lake. At the very end it kept cutting out. Got it home and was trying to winterize it. It started and ran about 10 seconds. Then died. I cleaned all connections at coil. Checked all fuses. It will crank but no fire. Got a new coil and still no fire. Tested and have power going into mpem but nothing coming out. Computer was said to be new by guy i bought it from. Looks new. It is a cheap one from bay area power sports. If the mpem is no good i will get no spark right? Im trying to make sure the computer is it before i just buy another. I also read that the rear electrical box has its own ground. Where is it and what does it connect to for grounding? Dr honda told the other guy to check it with a meter at the neg battery post. Im not sure exactly how to do that. Could really use some advice on this. It is my first seadoo and im not real familiar with the workings yet. Thanks everyone.

should be a black wire coming out of rear electrical box (next to battery) that goes to bat. neg. This wire goes thru a Deutsch plug in the top of the box, then to a fastener at the bottom of the coil with more grounds. Deutsch pins & plugs can corrode. Fastener at bottom of coil screws into plastic and can come loose or corrode

Ok. I will check that tonight. I do know that currently the only wire to the neg batt terminal is the main neg. It does not go into the box. I will see if i can locate the wires you mentioned. In the box the only connection to the coil are on the top side. Three black wires but i cant recall exactly where each is from. I do believe one comes in from plug at top of box, one from ingition solenoid and other is attached at fastener then into coil. Thanks for your reply.

Not saying it is your problem but those cheap MPEM's have been know to be bad out of the box.

I kinda figured that they were. It is my problem now though! Lol. Not funny though. I just wanna get this thing to run so i can winterize it and then next summer get a good mpem. Im hopin what tobytd said will help cuz i dont have any wire going to neg. Ill yrace it down and hopefully fond a short. It WAS running...

97 Gti doesn't have the second ground to the battery like the 800s have.

By coil do you mean the ignition coil or stator coil ? Check the stator. It won't fire without it. Plug is at the front of the motor, mag end. Those mpems are junk. I've had two bad ones on skis I worked on .

Front of the motor towards the handlebars. There is a plug. Check the connectors.

It may also have a ground coming out of that plug to the mag cover. It's been awhile since I owned mine so I'm not sure about that.

Is it normal for the starter to engage for a second when the battery is connected? When i have the key plug in and i connect the bat neg the starter jumps as if i bumped the start button. I dont think it should do that...

Not normal. Low voltage can cause this and or a stuck solenoid. But in your case, I'm betting it is the aftermarket MPEM. It's closing the start circuit when getting initial power.

Well i still havent solved the spark issue. I took off mag cover but didnt have the socket here to get flywheel off. Couldnt look at stator yet so dont know if thats it. It was poorly grounded though. Im really thinking this is all from the cheap mpem. May just get a new one... Thanks to everyone who has posted to help me out. I really appreciate it.

It probably is your mpem. Did you see metal shavings around the flywheel ? If so they are also on your stator contacts which causes crazy things like sparks from your negative post when you hook it up. I'm not sure if it would cause your starter to bump but I'm thinking it could. You will need a puller for the flywheel though.

It would be worth checking. Doesn't cost anything but some time. My Gti went crazy electrically and that's what it was. Metal shavings magnetized to the stator contacts creating a bridge between the 2 contacts. Also never have your key plugged on when hooking up your battery.

Thanks for the info. There are shavings present. I will check it out and hopefully get this thing going!
