I picked up a 97 Gti last friday, been doing some odds and ends on it. One thing that I have a question about is the choke knob, When I pull it out and let go it slides right back in, shouldn't it stay out by itself so I don't need three hands to start it when cold? Also I have a question about DSS keys in 1996 what seadoo's had them? I have a bunch of other questions but i'll work on these two for now. Thanks ART

OK art, first off you posted a jet ski question in the boat section but I'm gonna help you anyway!
The choke is normal. You should only need 2 hands in order to start the ski.....Left hand for the start button and right hand for the choke. You shouldn't have to work the throttle. DESS came out in 1996 and I'm thinking most models had it.

This is not a big deal, but it's kind of a pet peeve of mine. SeaDoo expects you to be a contortionist to start this ski. Fortunately you only need to do this once a day. Left thumb on start button, right hand pull the choke and hit the throttle with your right forearm, I've been doing this so many years it's almost feels natural. This is pretty much common on most two stroke ski's.

If you happen to have newer carbs with accelerator pump you rarely need to choke, but they're rare.

BTW, Welcome to the SeaDoo forum.

I don't understand. I've been working on SeaDoos for a living for a long time now and have never HAD to apply any throttle in order to start a cold SeaDoo. Install lanyard, pull out choke, hit the start button and boom....she's running.

I don't think I'm alone there was a thread on this very subject and I would say at least 90% of the people answering did the same thing. Maybe 4-teks are different, the thread was in the 2-stroke section. I'm not a professional but I've had to do this to every carb'ed SeaDoo I've ever owned.

This isn't the thread I was looking for, but it's on the same subject. If there is a way to fix I would be interested.

I viewed those replies Lou, but they are talking about starting a WARM engine. I agree with that aspect. Most 2 strokes like a little throttle when starting after a warm engine shut down. I'm talking cold engine start. Never had a problem. I say this assuming the ski was in good running condition to begin with. So are you saying you have to choke AND apply some throttle in order to start your cold SeaDoo?

Maybe you're right, I've been doing it this way for so many years it's become second nature. Next time I go the the lake I'll try it with no throttle. Come to think of it I never use the throttle when the ski's are out of the water. Thanks

Lou
