I was given a 97 gti that the owner lost the key. I have 96 gti that I have a key for. What exactley do I need to swap to get the 97 running just to check it out versus driving an hour + each way to the sea doo dealer to get a key made. Also where would these compenents be located? He told me the engine was leaking water so before i spend any money I want to make sure what i have.

Welcome. WHere in PA are you?

If the engine was leaking water... it can be from anywhere. It's common for the cylinders to split, if they are left out in during the winter, and they weren't winterized. There is a weld plug in the exhaust that is known to rot... or, any of the hoses can be split.

The Key has to be programmed by a dealer. It has a digital security system in it... and it's not easy to bypass. On a 720, there are ways to do it... but I don't recommend it. (you bypass the rev-limiter, and can damage the engine)

I am in Havertown Pa. My step son goes to Pitt Just came home yesterday for the summer. My other questions was I have 96 gti different body same engine. What do i need to swap to get the 97 started just to know it is good enought to salvage.

OK... the other side of the state.

If you pull the black/red wire going from the coil, down to the MPEM, you can start the engine. (just jump the solenoid) BE CAREFUL. You will no longer have a kill switch. You will have to choke the engine to stop it. (don't try to ride it this way)

If you want to check it with parts from your 96... you can just swap the MPEM... but I don't remember if 96 and 97 use the same type. I'll check and let you know.

Nope... 97 was the new style MPEM... so unless you want to do ALOT of cutting and soldering of the wires... you can't swap the electrical parts.

thank you for your help. I just want to get it started to see if actually starts and then crank it to test compression. or vice versa.
