Hello everyone..
I have a 97 GSX as well, it started out bogging down and no high rpms ran about 15 or the lake, brought it back to the shore, tried to adjust the raves, only to find out that one was stripped out in the threads and not opening at all. And had a hole in the exhaust freeze plug i believe what it is called. Fixed that to, and well put the thing back in the water this yr and it wouldn't even start. backfire spit and cough. So i got some rebuild kits and for the carbs, replaced the gray fuel lines, still wouldn't run. checked compression read 60 psi on both cylinders. i thought i'd give it a shot and just for the heck of it and replace the plugs, only thing i haven't done yet. and Bam started right up and ran good on land. took it to the water and it would run like at 7050 Rpm's and only do about 43 if i laid down on the bike. and from what i've read this bike should do about 60+, So where do i go from here??? Carb Adjustments? or wear ring? or Rave valve adjustments? sorry for the book but figured i'd get it all in there at once. Thanks for any help with this issues.

Compression

It sounds like the lack of compression is the main problem, compression should be 150psi and no lower than 130psi, with a difference not exceeding 10psi per cylinder.

I'm afraid its time for a least an upper end rebuild.

retested today with a new compression tester and both cylinders are @150 psi.. actually one was like 152 or so but once it hit 150 i stopped cranking on it. thanks for the reply

Wear Ring

Hi Butch,

That's great news.

The next thing I would look at is the wear ring. It sounds like you are making enough rpm's but the speed is low. The wear ring would give a symptom like if your ski was a car the clutch was slipping.

Visually inspect your wear ring for missing pieces. Also the clearance between the wear ring and the impeller should be no more than .040" (about the thickness of a dime) you can check this with a feeler guage. While you are looking check the impeller for signs of dings or dents.

Changing the wear ring is not hard and you can do it yourself, there are threads about changing the wear ring in the "How To" section of this forum.

You could have a bad carbon ring but I would take a look at the wear ring first.
