Hello there my name is Shaun just by the research on this website you guys look very knowledgeable about alot a few quick questions for you I recently purchased a 97 gsi where should I start as far as water worthy I am a very very meticulous person I am an 8 field ase certified tech and have dabbled in the marine aspect of inboard and outboards but not extensively in pwc are there notorious problems with these that I should know about and how easy are the carb rebuild adjustments to do might u have a link or a part number for the rebuild kits compression check steps to checking it is it the same process as an automobile again thanks for any help in advance
Shaun

Check compression first.150 is good 120 and below time for a rebuild. See if you have gray fuel lines next. If so time to redo the fuel system. Carb rebuild , new fuel lines, new fuel selector. Check out the carb rebuild thread and the carb reference thread for settings.

Also clean all your connectors and grounds . Use dialectic grease on everything. Might save you some trouble down the road. Spray your carb springs and cables with white lithium grease.

I have a wounded '97 GSI.

If it still has the Grey Fuel Lines, Replace all of them.

Check to make sure the engine doesn't have any movement as it's mounted in the Saddle.

There are four aircraft nuts under the saddle, mine worked loose over time even though they had LocTite.

Did the previous owner tell u what oil he was using? Never mix oils. That’s one of the biggest no nos along with jumpstarting.

Yes he said yamalube I what he used while I'm asking what are common no spark conditions for this ski if any? Fuses? Ignition?

That is absolutely the wrong oil, get it out, flush the system and change the oil filter then add API-TC oil only.

The ski won't start without the right key on it. Place key on post and you should get 2 beeps to confirm the right key and then it should fire up. Check fuses, 3 in the front compartment and 1 in the black box at the back.
I bought mine as a non runner. It would turn over but wouldn't fire. I found a broken earth wire under the exhaust by the throttle / oil cable.
New to PWC's myself but learn a lot for here and generally working on it. Hope that helps
