97 challenger no spark, then spark, still won't start.

ok, i'm still trying to start this rebuilt engine that i installed in a 97 challenger single. When i try to start it i get 2-3 cranks that last 5-10 seconds before the starter just makes a clunking sound and won't turn the motor. With the plugs out the motor cranks fine. The battery is a one year old autocraft marine group 24 with 500cca's. I took it back to the store they tested it and said it was ok. I also load tested it and it tested ok. The starter is SBT high torque probably 1-2 years old. Tonight i cleaned the starter ground, used di-electric grease hoping this might be the problem.
Something else, i hook up an inline spark tester that has a light. When i first crank the engine no light, no spark. After hitting the start button a few times i start to get spark, but not enough cranking and spark to start the engine. Then i have to wait or charge the battery again to get a few more cranks out of it. Any help, thanks...

It sounds like your battery may not be holding a charge very well either, even though you had it tested. It doesn't take much to turn over such a small engine (if the starter is healthy). So if you can only get a few cranks before having to recharge try a fresh battery, or at least get a high amp charger so you can start it with the aid of the charger as well. Maybe use some jumper cables from a running car as well.

If you have been trying to start it without getting any spark for a while, it's also possible the plugs are fouled. Once you get a good/healthy battery (or starter) that spins it over briskly, throw in a fresh set of plugs and give it a whirl. Also, try using a timing light with an inductive probe instead of the inline tester when checking for spark. The inline testor may be decreasing the voltage getting to that one plug, making it even harder to start with one plug underperforming.

i think i'm going to try the starter first. Just disappointing the current starter is a year or two old.
