Great instructions, thanks. Shop manual has no info or picture showing location and just says “cables from starter...screw of starter rear support....starter mount screws!”

On the carb side of the engine under the carbs towards the front. Just follow the red battery cable and it will take you to the starter.

Got it out, it had no rear support bracket. I’m thinking it’s an aftermarket starter. It spins & sparks when hooked up to 12v but bendix does not come out. Anybody have an original they might sell me?

Had to make a quick decision so am going with this aftermarket unit from eBay for $50. Seller has sold 40 of them with no bad feedback so am giving it a shot.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate on either of these. I'd go for the one without the broken stud first.

I know you guys are right, but can’t cancel the order since it’s already shipped, hit the ‘buy it now’ button too fast. If or more correctly when this next one fails will definitely take get a used OEM!

I'm with miki, I have never had an after market work. Did you have a full 12 volts when you tested that starter? Did you have a very solid ground? If so, then your bendix could be at fault, or it could easily be poor contact with the brushes, from slush on the armature due to water ingestion. Amazingly OME brush kits are cheap, also check your magnets, of course if they are broken you will find their bits and pieces in the starter.

If the starter I removed was OEM I definitely would have rebuilt it. I didn’t attempt to repair the one I pulled out as wasn’t sure if OEM parts could be used to repair an aftermarket. I had 12.85 volts in my ski when it failed, but when I hooked the old starter to 12 volts out of the ski it was sparking like crazy, I’m guessing the brushes were bad and it just wasn’t spinning fast enough to engage the bendix. Wish now I would of bought one of those OEM starters @racerxxx found. When I was looking at EBay didn’t see those as I was searching by part number. I’ll just throw this new aftermarket starter in for now and when it fails will find a OEM!

The problem with most aftermarket starters is the shaft will break. I had one that the bendix suck out on. I think the shaft bent and that was the end of it. Mostly garage starts and not many water starts. Doesn't matter who's brand, they're all the same. Somewhere in here I posted the differences on the aftermarket ones, that's why you don't have a rear bracket. The casting webs are in the way and the bracket doesn't fit properly and then the mounting hole won't line up.

Went ahead and purchased the OEM from Ebay for $45, will try to sell the aftermarket. Should I replace any parts in the used unit before installing, like maybe the brushes?

Just return the aftermarket one, you'll be stuck with it

Installed the used OEM starter I bought on eBay for $45 and it started right up. Had a little difficulty starting the Allen bolt on the rear support, felt like the hole wasn’t lining up perfectly but finally got it started and had to cut down a 6mm Allen wrench to tighten it up. That was the hardest part of the install. Thanks for all the advice, really appreciate the help. Got another problem but will do some research before posting a new thread!
