i took both of my xp's out today. both ran perfect to start. then just suddenly one dies while at full throttle. start it back up start going again then it dies again. i changed the rectifier before i went out. and that corrected the bogging down issue at start up. checked all the wires after it died all were still connected. could it be possible that the carbs need adjustment? i replaced all the gray fuel lines 2 years ago. and all the fuel filters. need help to fix it before the weekend.

no but i was just reading about that. it ran great the first part of the season and for about an hour today. i will check into that tomorrow.

had a similar problem with my 95 xp. Mine started by stalling at full throttle and dying out in turns and then it quickly got worse and started stalling too often to enjoy riding it. I replaced the grey fuel lines and bypassed the fuel selector swith. Turns out it was the fuel baffle. The digital fuel gauge worked fine but the baffle was sucking air somewhere. Now it runs great with a new baffle i bought off an online auction but the fuel gauge doesn't work.

Pull the carbs off and clean them. Inspect the diaphrams for tears. As long as nothing is torn reuse everything just clean real good with carb cleaner. I bet your filters inside the carbs are your prob. The filters can be cleaned with soap and water. The mesh is delicate and carb cleaner can eat right through them.:willy_nilly:

I am reading through threads trying to touble shoot my 1996 xp and wanted to know what the rectifier is/does???

ok so i have gone as swapping out one set of carbs with ones sitting on my bench. adjusted them before they went in. had same problem. swapped carbs back with both adjusted the same. same problem. swapped out the electrical box and lanyard post. i will be testing that out tomorrow. i only changed the box because as riding it it seemed like it just lost all electrical power. just shut down.

do note i have a whole 96 xp that has a blown motor on it. so swapping parts is an easy thing to do. that one ran great til the bearing on the crank went then just messed everything up inside.

Could be a bad connection on the dess post? You can clean it and the key with light soap and water. Knock that out of the way!

What kind of spark are you getting?
