96 xp motor wont crank over

i can hear starter spinning, but motor is not trying to turn over

can you turn the motor over by hand?

i removed spark plugs and pto cover and turned counterclockwise and engine cranked over very easily.

Could be broken starter. It happened on mine

did your's sound like it was spinning (like a quiet blender)

your bendix isn't engaging then, chances are water got it and froze it up.

now what. replace starter?

sounds like it , pull the starter and see if its all rusted out or not. Choices are to have it rebuilt. I know you can get bendix kits on ebay for 20-30 bucks but I have never used them so don't know. Buy a used one from ebay or wherever. Go new .............but please don't be tempted by the 37 new starter aftermarket it will fail.....
