96 XP ignition coil

What I have is an ignition coil with a split length-wise with a portion of it looking like melted plastic. What caused this? Is there something else I need to look at, test, when I replace this part? I think the battery terminal hook ups were switched neg/pos for several cranks before I noticed the mistake. would this fry the coil?

it very well could have caused the coils to over heat and crack i would just make sure your batter is hooked up correctly and then install a new coil and see what happends
