Hello and thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

I have a 96 xp that was surging very bad. I took the advice I found on here and changed all the fuel lines, cleaned the small fuel filters in the Carb. Now the engine is running great.

The new Problem:

I took it out this weekend and it runs fine on the top end, shows about 58 to 60mph on the top end. This issue is out of the hole. The revs sound good but it is almost like the impeller is just spinning and no grabbing any water. It slowly gets going and then tops out fine.

The impeller looks good and does not look damaged.

Any help would be apprieciated.

You need to check the clearence on the wear ring... I am not sure of the exact spec, I thinks it's 1mm between the impeller and the ring.. I am sure someone will let you know if I am wong..

Welcome to the seadoo forum. Have you done a compression test lately? If the compression is a bit low it might be a problem. Also, you might install new spark plugs properly gaped, to see if that helps. You just might have a fouled spark plug.

If the wear ring was worn out it would display high rpm's and not display thrust to get to top speed...having lots of cavitation.

Thanks for such a quick response!

New plugs gapped to spec. Engine sounds great. I have owned 2 other 96 XP, one was brand new. I am familiar with how it should sound/feel, so I think I am good on the plugs. I will try some new plugs to be on the safe side.

Does anyone have pic of the way the wear ring should look like? Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

To check the wear ring clearance, it should be .014" or 1 mm. The gap should be checked at the center of the impeller blade and measured from the Nozzle end of the jet pump. You need a 12" guage to get to the blade to measure it.

as the wear ring goes bad the rpm's increase quickly as the pump doesn't have enough pump pressure due to a large gap around the impeller...so it just cavitates. That doesn't sound like your problem.

Yeah my first guess is the wear ring also you can see visual damage on them also. Look at it through intake grate and the nozzle I replaced one earlier for th same problem. It should be black but there it white underneath the black and mt black was brittle and cracked away. Or clean the raves is my second guess they may be stuck open

A thought for you

When my 97 GTS was band new and in the water for the first time it acted like it was cavitating and possibly the intake grate was blocked by weeds. The dealer diagnosed the pump sucking air. He removed the pump, threw away the foam gasket between the pump and hull and used black silicone instead of the foam gasket. Problem solved. Dealer said some hulls are not perfect and foam gasket cannot bridge the gap, I have had the pump out a few times an always replaced it using silicone and the problem has never returned.

Thanks for the reply. This sounds interesting. Do you
remember if you could a suction noise coming
from the nozzel area. Now that you said this, I
remember hear a suction type noise while the ski
was moving to top speed.

Is this the gasket that is between the transom and
the back of the jet pump? If so it also looks like it
might be deterorating which would cause what your
talking about.
