96 xp would hardly run. Give it gas would shut off. Cleaned carbs, changed, fliters etc. They were in terrible condition. Put back together went to river, cranked fine, but when you give it gas would die. Started playing with throttle and found out if you feathered it a bit it and got rpm up it would take off. Got back home and took covers off and adjusted carbs and when I crank now it will idle up by itself and motor will start to race. Any help would be appreciated. Tmac.

When you say "race," do you mean that the engine runs away with itself?
If so...same thing happened to me when I cranked my 99 GTX up the first time after having the carbs off for cleaning. It was sucking air at the base of the carbs because I didn't install the gasket properly.
You might have an air leak...check it out. :cheers:
