I have a 96 speedster and am in the process of replacing both wear rings and hoses seals etc.. The one came a parts and went together fine (thanks to the sticky on how to found here). The second one the impeller bolt was extremely tight and had a tough time getting apart. I had to put it in the vise with a 4ft pipe and 3ft breaker bar. Before removing is noticed the proper moved about 3/8 to 1/2 of inch in and out of the housing. The other side was tight not doing this. The side with this issue was my worse cavitation side. The thrust washer measure about half the thickness of the one replaced on the other side. I have new one so I re-assembled and found that with the new washer I could not get the bolt tighter than snug before the prop would stop turning. I have looked at the needle bearing and it appears ok. I have looked at the prop and do not see anything there. No wear marks inside the housing by the fro seal area either. Any one have any suggestions please let me know.
Thanks

All I can say is to take it apart, and make sure all the bearings are pressed to the proper depth, an that the washer isn't getting pinched as you are tightening the impeller.

In and out movement is normal, but it should be less than 1/16".

I have been apart couple time now. Have a couple different thrust washers and tried all of them since they are all different thickness. Not change. I have it apart and checked the bearings. Look to be at the proper press depth. Could the impeller be worn or the housing? You guys here are great with ideas. If that impeller is walking in and out will it cause cavitation like I am thinking?

I figured out what happened. The last person in this has the wrong thrust washer in it and flattened out the wheedle bearing. By do this and operating the boat has worm 3mm off the inside of the impeller mounting. This is why with new bearing and washer still has movement. If anyone has a good impeller 271000400 for a fair price let me know by PM.
