I pulled the trigger on this beautiful 96 XP. Needs some work because the engine wont start and grey fuel lines. using the troubleshooting in the seadoo manual and the gurus on this site to help me.

The engine turns when I pull spark plugs and crank by hand but I get nothing when i push the start button. When i put the key in, it doesnt beep, the gauges light up but no clicks when i press the start button and no turning of the engine.

Battery should be good it starts my 95 with the push of a button.

First im going to try to clean the key and tighten nut on dess post. Then the start button diagnostic by pressing the start button 5 times. If that doesn't do it then im inspecting and changing fuses. Next im going to try and jump the solenoid. If nothing then clean terminals and ground wires. Any other suggestions or ideas on what I should try first?

Definitely selling the tigershark and one trailer. I have lots of work to do on the jet skis tomorrow. Taking pictures tomorrow so I can show off my new XP and posting an ad on craigslist for Tigershark and double trailer. I have no idea what to sell it for. hahah.

I'd put them for sale separately honestly, I think you may get more for it that way. I don't know your prices but maybe 500 for the double and maybe a lil less for the tiger

Fix the beeper so you can hear if your getting two beeps... That would narrow it down to DESS or starter solenoid.

Its killing me that you guys are giving me all these hints on how to fix my xp and I'm stuck at work. hahaha. I can't wait until tomorrow when I can troubleshoot the electrical. Wish me luck guys. I'm going to need it. Electrical always scared me a little bit but with the help I've been getting from you guys, I'm starting to feel like I can do this.

when I jump the solenoid tomorrow does the dess have to be in the post?

I think I read I can get a beeper from radio shack and there's one right by my house. my friend has one of those multi meter things for voltage I'm going to try and use. Never used one before but now is a better time than any?

I changed the beeper on my spx with a stock used one and it immediately worked... Was good to hear two beeps every time you put key on. That tells me DESS workin properly. A lot of people have DESS key post problems and you have to put on key and take off multiple times before ski cranks and because your beeper doesn't work you don't know if your gettin two beeps or one...

Check it with the multimeter first, no sense replacing a part without testing it first

I too am interested in this post. How would someone test this with a multimeter? It seems you could either 1) leave the beeper wired up and test for a voltage from one or the other side of the beeper to ground or 2) disconnect the beeper and test resistance across both beeper wires.

A suggested approach (1 or 2) and expected result (x volts or y ohms) would be very informative.

Hook the 2 wires from the beeper to the positive and negative of a battery. If it beeps your good to go, no beep, replace beeper.

Not quite, the one on my 96 worked great on the battery test, but failed miserably in the MPEM test, she was a no beep.

Did you try activating the MPEM by tapping the start button, then ground out the temperature sensor wire? I've noticed the beppers will sometimes make the slightest little faint sound, for a split second even when they are bad. (if there is not other background sounds) Kinda hard to hear though. I currently have 4 skis, three of the four had bad beppers when I got them.

When I bought my GSX, the P/O said it never made beeps & he looked at me weird when I mentioned it didn't beep upon installing the key.
He never knew it was supposed too.

Unfortunately I didn't get to work on my skis today. It came with a battery and I tried to charge it but its not holding 12v on the meter. It was at 9v after charging 12 hours. Also didn't want to take the battery out the 95, which rode like a champ again today, to put it into the 1996 so i bought a new one and its charging right now. Pretty much, I went spearfishing instead of fixing up the 96 XP. Took a bunch of pictures today that I'm posting soon. Most are for the Tigershark and trailer I'm posting on craigslist tonight. After giving it a quick spray with the hose it actually looks a lot better. Got some strange red goo out of the footwells and some black stuff stuck in between the hood and the storage compartment. The hull has almost no scratches. Handlebar pad is really ugly. Looks like black mold on it or something. I'm going to the do it yourself car wash soon with the pressure washer and remove the dirt and stains that the garden hose couldn't handle. First thing tomorrow I want to install the battery and try to jump the solenoid.

Pictures of XP

Took the the fuel bowl off to clean it and it's brand new. On the 95 xp I worked on, it was so bad we couldn't clean it and bought a new one. Also had brand new spark plugs in it and a full tank of gas. Barely any oil and I'm' thinking it's mineral because there's an empty bottle of mineral XPS in the trailer box. Was going to do the oil intake lines while the carbs were off anyways. Might as well change the oil filter and flush the lines. Read about cleaning rave valves but I haven't even troubleshot the electrical. Getting ahead of myself.

Whoa, the ski actually looks pretty damn clean if I do say so myself, but you do have some work to do. First thing, take that battery thing out, I hope he didnt fry the mpem using that thing. Then of course, you have the grey fuel lines to replace. From the looks of it the engine has never been apart either, I dont see any paint chips on the rave valve bolts which lead me to believe they have never been cleaned, so that should be interesting to see lol they are probably full of sludge

Do you have a charger hooked up to the battery while it is connected to your seadoo? If so do not do that again, when charging the battery take it out of the seadoo. You can damage the mpem that way.

I really hope not. Just looked at the prices of a mpem and I almost choked. Crosses fingers. They don't give money for blood in CA so I'm screwed unless my tigershark and trailer sells.

Ty for the tip. Thought about it before but decided against it. That battery charger thingy was in there when i bought it and I didn't plan on ever using it. I thought it looked strange. Taking it out immediately. I hope that maintainer didn't mess it up.

If the charger is low wattage, its prob fine. We are over sensitive about the MPEMs so we protect them, but it shouldnt hurt it.

It does look much less faded from the side.

The pump on the 95 extends out farther from the hull than the pump on the 96 XP. Just put them both on the same trailer after putting new carpet on and noticed right away. Looks good side to side. Pictures to come. Spent most of the day replacing the carpet on the trailers so the other trailer with tigershark is ready to go but didn't have time for the 96 XP again.

Just some pictures after fixing the carpet. Washed it as best as I could without a pressure washer.

I am definitely doing the troubleshooting tomorrow but first things first. I'm trying to sell my trailer and tigershark. Don't laugh too hard about it being a tigershark. Motor is solid and its a fun ride. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lgb/boa/3690061870.html

Get some soft scrub with bleach and a scotch pad and scrub the chit out of the hood. A good hour and it will be like new.

If for some reason you cant, I do have some really nice ones in stock.
