Hello,

I have a 96 seadoo gsx bombardier I’m not getting the two beeps or anything on display when I connect the lanyard. I pulled the 3 large connectors on the MPES and found the display cluster connector to be full of water. So I probably have big issues. Only one blown 15a fuse which I replaced. I cleaned all the grounds I could find including the grey connector on the front of the motor. Compression test 150 on Mag cylinder and 150 pto cylinder. It turns over when I jump the starter Relay but nothing with the button.

I searched for a replacement MPES but could not find an exact match I attached a picture of it.
Thank you

Double check the year of your ski. I believe the '96 had the grey ebox, and the '97 did not. That looks like a '97 GSX mpem, which are specific to the '97 and expensive used

I have a 96 GSX and that’s not like any box in my ski. On the 96 make sure you have the main ground and a small black black wire coming out of the back rear box also has to be connected to the ground or you’ll get no power.

Thanks for the reply’s,

I did not see this small ground wire anywhere. I found the wiring diagram and that small wire goes to the ignition coil grounds so I added my own from ignition coil to battery still nothing.

Unhook the VTS from your MPEM box. On My 96 XP it had three connections. Also check fuses in front and rear boxes. Hopefully the water didn't permanently damage anything. On my GSX a friend flipped it and the rear box was also filled with water. Sat like that a couple of days before I noticed it. I shop vacuumed it out and let it dry a couple days, took air compressor and blew out connections and has been fine.

Do your gauges power up when you push the start/stop button without the lanyard attached?

Anyone know if this style MPEM will work if I mount the external voltage regulator elsewhere? Seller says it’s from a 97 gsx with the lanyard

Why are you trying to get a different MPEM? I have a 96' GSX and that's not the style MPEM that comes on that ski. Alternative ski, same MPEM search for a 96' XP MPEM, should be the same part #, grey box with the separate ECI module. I had to get another MPEM for my 96' GSX, call Nick at Westside Powersports if you think you've narrowed it down to that.

ill look that up sir.

I can’t get anything to turn on at all which is why I’m pointing to the MCEM I found some water in the display cluster connector so I’m guessing that’s why.

this MCEM is not easy to find anywhere. My local dealer pretty much told me I’m not going to find it. I either need to retrofit another or find one.

That isn't a '97 GSX mpem. The pic in your first post is a '97. Here are pics of an mpem from a '97 GSX that I torn down for partsIMG_20191029_143247071.jpgIMG_20191029_143302515.jpg

According to @jts32 it’s definitely a 97. I was just going off date code on the hull. I’ll be calling around today for a MPEM.

thanks guys
If you look at the last two digits of the hull identification number it will tell you the year. Example: ZZN*******97 is a '97 ski.

Also easy to tell by color, the '96 is blue and white, the '97 is red and white

I was able to do some troubleshooting today.
The beeper is no good, start stop switch is no good. Starter relay clicks when applied power to the signal wire but starter does not turn so bad relay.
I put a test light in place of the beeper and when I put the key in I get 1 short beep.
When I jump the start stop switch 1 short beep.
No gauges or lights but that’s probably a bad display.
im guessing 1 short beep means key unrecognized but someone could confirm.

That is correct. 1 beeps means the MPEM is reading the key but doesn't recognize the code of that particular key.

FYI, the late year 96 GSX skis used the rarer 97 GSX MPEM. So it can be a 96 ski with a 97 style mpem. I know, I have one like that. To use the 96 style, you will need to change the front electrical box and harness.
