Hey guys,

My son's 96 XP is starting to show signs of a bad MPEM. (we know this because we exchanged his box and mine...and then my ski had the exact same problems)

IT will run for about a 100 feet, then start firing off the front cylinder only...if you hit the kill switch and then start it back up, she will run fine for about another 100 feet. Sometimes this happens 3 times and then she runs fine the rest of the day...and sometimes it takes 15 times to get the day started....and the last time we was out, she would run fine for 20 minutes, then start running on the rear cylinder again...SO, i figure we have milked this box long enough...has been doing this all summer. LOL

Anyhoo....what is the best fix. Just buy a used box off ebay, or buy a new part to replace the old one in the box itself.

Only real problem here...I dont know which part of the MPEM is bad.?? Would hate to drop some good money and find out it was the OTHER electrical component in there.

Thanks in advance for the help too

Mitch

Could just need plug boots pulled off and wire snipped a 1/4" and put boot back on
dielectric grease it and a zip tie. Could be a loose connection in grey box, or its
ground lug nut loose.

Where is the ground lug nuts?

And thanks for the other ideas...i will try that this weekend..if the weather is warm enough..

instead of changing the entire grey box, you should switch only the MPEM itself to make sure, it's a 10 minute swap. it could be the cdi box and they were separate from the MPEM on the 96xp and attached to the other side of the grey box.
if you buy a used MPEM, you can send it to me with the keys and I can program the keys to it, I have BUDS.

ground lug is in the grey box. since you've switched grey boxes, you know the problem is in there, trimming the plug wires back won't fix it.

This would make sense...guess I was just putting off changing all those wires around inside the box itself.
:stupid:

I will get to work on this...see which one is the bad component

Anyone have any good prices (or places) for buying a new MPEM or CDI.?

price of a new mpem might send you into shock. ebay is good this time of year, very cheap if you can find what you're looking for, but make sure you buy from a reputable person who guarantees the electronics are good.

I picked up a 96xp a month ago for $500, I'm tempted to part it out like I've done in the past because they're worth more in parts than whole but this one is pretty clean and only 137 hrs.
