96 GTX 787 PTO No Compression

Took my ski out for its first ride of the season. Thought it was running great until it was stalling out. I knowing had leaky crank seal so I installed a shutoff oil valve and had it turned off when not in use. I now learned that my PTO side cylinder has 0 compression, with the mag side at 138. Bad news.

I'm looking for advice about what to do next. How do I know If I need a new engine or top end?

Also, what could have possibly caused a PTO side failure? Clogged carbs? Clogged fuel lines? I want to do all I can to ensure this won't happen again. Thank you

leaky crank seal will cause a lean condition and burn a piston as will dirty carbs and crappy old tempo fuel lines will clog the carbs.
as far as a new motor or rebuilding the top end , you would have to pull the motor apart and check. sometimes 0 compression in a cylinder means you shot a rod through the bottom of the block. then a new motor is surely in order. sometimes you can get lucky and just replace the piston and the jug. but find out what caused the original problem before you throw away good money.

If you were leaking oil into your engine then you had a leaky inner crank seal. This will not cause a lean running condition. Take the head off and see what it looks like you'll most likely just need a top enf

With zero compression you most likely have a hole in the piston caused either by a lean condition or simply metal fatigue. I would pull the head and have a look see. With leaky crank seals and a 20 year old engine you are just wasting money doing a top end.

Unless you want to rebuild the engine just for the "fun" of it, I would suggest a rebuilt crate engine.
